More ticket barriers for Aberdeen

On Wednesday 12 March, automatic ticket gates will come into operation on platform seven at Aberdeen Station. The move follows the introduction of gates on the concourse in March 2007 serving platforms one to six.

Reflecting First ScotRail’s franchise commitment to revenue protection and reducing ticketless travel, there will be two standard gates and two wide aisle gates for customers using wheelchairs or travelling with luggage or buggies.

A state of the art video help point is also being installed to allow customers arriving without a ticket or requiring assistance, to contact a member of staff out with peak times.

As has already been demonstrated, the ticket gates help speed up the ticket checking process for the benefit of customers, allowing them to enter or exit the platforms quickly and easily. In addition to reducing ticketless travel, they have also been shown to discourage anti-social behaviour and improve station security.

Peter Williams, First ScotRail’s commercial director, said: “The introduction of ticket gates on platform seven will provide quick and convenient access to the concourse as well as the car park. The station refurbishment has already seen a number of enhancements introduced including ticket vending machines, lifts and the relocation of the car park to five dedicated floors in the adjacent multi-storey and there are further improvements to come.”

Signage has been in place at the station since February to inform customers of when the new gates will be in operation.
