| One Railway honours Royal Anglian Regiment
|
One Railway hosted a high-profile locomotive naming at London Liverpool Street on Thursday 22 November 2007, when Class 90/0 No. 90012 was named East Anglian Regiment. This was the return of an old loco name, and was in recognition of the homecoming of the 1st Battalion Royal Anglian Regiment from their recent tour of duty in Afghanistan. Guest of honour at the naming was the Under Secretary of State for Defence, Derek Twigg MP. A large number of soldiers and their families from the 1st Battalion were also present in London for the ceremony. After introduction by One Railway Managing Director Andrew Chivers, and words from the Under Secretary of State for Defence, Major Tony Bourgnis spoke of the Battalions operations in Afghanistan and remembered those soldiers who were killed in action. Unveiling of the cast nameplate and regimental coat-of-arms was performed by Lance Corporal Simon Mercer. The cast nameplate is the original plate that was previously carried by Class 86/2 No. 86246 which was unveiled by HM The Queen Mother in a ceremony at London Liverpool Street station on 13 May 1985. After naming, No. 90012 powered the 10.30 departure to Norwich which transported a number of East Anglian Regiment soldiers and guests to Norwich where later in the day the Battalion was granted the Freedom of Norwich in the presence of the Lord Mayor of Norwich and Regiments Colonel-in-Chief HRH The Duke of Gloucester, prior to marching through the streets of the city to Norwich cathedral for a service of remembrance and thanksgiving. |
