Operated by both Thames Trains and Chiltern, the Class 165 fleet come in two and three car formations. The Thames sets are allocated to Reading depot, and the Chiltern sets to Aylesbury. The first two of the build, Nos. 165001 and 165002 stand side by side on Aylesbury depot soon after delivery. These sets built at BREL York, were finished from new in NSE livery. CJM



Thames-allocated two-car set No. 165118 leads a five car formation through Reading. This vie is taken from the standard class vehicle. Passenger access is by two pairs of sliding plug doors, while the driver has a single leaf sliding plug door. Frontal indication is by 'Group Standard' light clusters able to show tail, marker and head light indication. CJM.

In 2001 Chiltern Railways carried out a major refurbishment of set No. 165013. The interior was refitted with various styles of 2+2 and 2+3 seating using different seating styles. Technical equipment was also upgraded to meet the latest requirements. On the front end the light clusters were altered to show a headlight on both sides and a joint tail/marker light able to show either a red or white illumination using LED lighting. The set, also repainted into Chiltern livery is seen at Aylesbury. CJM.
