Set No. 409 of the fleet of 52 three car sets introduced for the Liverpool Street-Enfield and Chingford lines. This view shows the classic 1960s front end body style. Body front connections consisted of main reservoir and brake pipes together with multiple control jumpers. On the buffer beam was just a drop-head buck-eye coupling. Set 409 is painted in original green livery. CJM Collection.
The final unit No. 519 of the second batch of 19 AM5s introduced for services to Bishops Stortford and Hertford East services is shown from its DTS end at Broxbourne, with a Class 15 powered freight on the right. This unit has a small yellow warning panel end. J Puntis.
Following facelift in the 1970s, the Class 305s were first painted in blue grey livery after a period in BR blue, before being finished in NSE colours as shown here on set 305523 at Ilford. The refurbishment work saw the removal of the four-position route indicator blinds at roof height and the fitting of sealed beam marker and headlights on the front end. CJM
After finishing work in the north London area, a batch of Class 307s were transferred to the Manchester area for local work. Repainted in full Regional Railways livery and internally cleaned up, set No. 305507 is seen in sidings at Stockport. CJM
Another area to gain Class 305 activity after finishing work in the London area was in Scotland, where a handful of sets allocated to Shields were used right up until early 2002 on Edinburgh area local services on the North Berwick branch. Set No. 305519 is seen at Edinburgh painted in Regional Railways livery with a ScotRail logo on the front. The sets allocated to Scotland were all internally refurbished with full corridor connections within set. To assist haulage between the Edinburgh and Glasgow area, extended brake pipes were fitted as standard to these sets, thus reaching the buffer beam connections on locomotives. CJM.
