When first introduced the 1975-78 built Class 312 fleet were finished in all-over BR rail blue, this soon gave way to blue-grey as shown here on set 312015 (later renumbered to 312725) arriving at Kings Cross. These sets followed the design of the Class 312s except for minor detail revisions on the front end including flat windscreens and decor. CJM

Following the application of blue-grey livery NSE colours were progressively applied, shown here on set No. 312730 which also sports an early version of a headlight. This unit is one of four sets operated for a short while in the Birmingham area (312201-204), which during this period carried a yellow/while livery. Set No. 312730 is seen at Ilford. CJM

Following privatisation of the rail network in the UK, many of the 312s became the operating property of First Great Eastern, who applied their grey, blue and green livery, seen here on set 317707 at Harwich Town. In the immediate post privatisation period, some refurbishment work was undertaken on the fleet by Ilford and this included the sealing up of some passenger external doors to reduce drafts. CJM
