Originally built for the Cross-London 'Thameslink' services, the Class 319 dual-power units soon found work on domestic south Thames services. 319/0 No. 319009 is seen at London Bridge in as built condition painted in NSE livery. The front door on these sets is not for between set movement, but is an emergency door for below London tunnel working. CJM





The follow-on order for 26 Class 319/1 sets were of a slightly revised body style, with a deep lower front skirt and revised internal layout. The sets were again finished in NSE livery but has a light grey front end surround. Set No. 319184 is seen awaiting delivery from BREL York Works. CJM




Upon privatisation of the railways, set No. 319030 was painted up in an early version of Thameslink livery by Selhurst depot, and looked moor like graffiti than a livery. This livery applied to the entire fleet of cross-London operated sets was replaced following refurbishment. CJM



Connex, the then operator of the SouthCentral franchise was the operator of a number of the early 319/0 sets after privatisation, these being used on domestic south Thames workings as well as on the Brighton-Gatwick-Watford-Rugby services. For this operation the dual power equipment had to be maintained. Set No. 319008 is seen approaching Milton Keynes working off the 25kV ac supply, painted in full Connex SouthCentral livery. CJM



As aspiration of Connex Southcentral after it was awarded its franchise was to improve the Victoria-Brighton route and for this a batch of 319/0s were refurbished to 319/2s and dedicated to the Brighton express service. The sets were repainted into Connex while, yellow and blue livery. Set 319217 is illustrated at its home depot Selhurst. CJM



The interior refurbishment of the Brighton Express Class 319/2s was a major undertaking, with 2+2 high quality seating installed together with a first class area in one driving car. A lounge area was also provided in the pantograph vehicle. The standard class area is seen left and the first class right. Both: CJM



The Thameslink operated sets, allocated to Selhurst are now all painted in the blue, white and yellow livery of the TOC. The fleet is broken down into two sub classes, the original members of the 319/0 sub class are all now refurbished and form Class 319/4 'City Flier' fleet, while the original 319/1 sets are now classified 319/3 and used on the Thameslink 'Metro' services.
