These 1995 introduced Royal Mail units were the centre piece of the modernisation of the Mail by Rail operation. The sets were based on the highly successful Class 319 dual voltage passenger sets. The Class 325s are non gangwayed motorised vans, which are designed to transport trolley mounted letter or parcel post. The sets are able to operate from 750V dc third rail or 25kV ac overhead. Set No. 325016 is seen approaching Kensington Olympia working from the third rail power supply en route to Tonbridge. CJM



The Class 325s are painted in Royal Mail red livery and are operated by EWS. The sets are based at Crewe and can be seen on the West Coast, East Coast and routes south of the Thames to Tonbridge. The sets are not authorised to work in multiple with any other multiple unit stock, but can be hauled by locomotives and are fitted with drop-head buck-eye couplers. Set No. 325005 is seen at Derby. Each Class 325 vehicle has two roller shutter sliding doors on each side and is designed to up to 12 tonnes of luggage. Car No. 68344 is illustrated. CJM
