The late 1990s modernisation of the LTS routes, now marketed under the C2C banner has been based on the introduction of Adtranz/Bombardier 'Electrostar' four-car sets. Serious problems have befell the fleet, mainly involving electrical equipment and certification by Railtrack for route operation. The sets were introduced in restricted numbers in mid 2001. An eight car set, painted in white and green livery is seen approaching Fenchurch Street station. CJM

The Class 357 'Electrostar' sets who share much of their external design with the Adtranz 'Turbostar' DMU fleet, are all based at East Ham depot, two separate fleets exist, 357/0 units are owned by Porterbrook, while 357/2 sets are owned by Angel Trains. Technically and internally the sets are identical. Set No. 357015 is seen at Shoeburyness. CJM
