3SUB set 1618, formed of converted SECR steam stock departs from Tadworth in the autumn of 1927. CJM Collection



A typical Trailer 2-car set, this one No. 1176 is formed of former CP stock from the LBSCR overhead of 1911 vintage. The set is seen stabled at Hayes in 1946. Note the SUB compatible jumpers on the vehicle ends. CJM Collection





The 4 car SUburban sets had an interesting life, with many sets originally being built as 3-car sets. here set No. 4227 of London & South Western origin is seen near Dorking. This was originally 3SUB No. 1278, the additional vehicle added to form a four car unit is third from the camera. CJM Collection



SR/BR standard 4-SUB set No. 4289 is seen when new in the late 1940s. The set is painted in Southern Railway green livery, with vehicle numbers applied at cant ail height. CJM Collection



4SUB front end layout (standard design set). Scrw couplings were fitted as standard, with a main reservoir and brake pipe on the buffer beam. On the nose end were power and control jumpers. Between the two front windows is the route indicator which on most sets was a stencil frame into while two number cut outs were slotted. CJM



Painted in standard post 1967 rail blue, 4SUB No. 4638 departs from New Malden with a Waterloo-Waterloo roundabout service via Kingston. CJM



Towards the end of the BR Southern Region operating 4SUB stock, set No. 4732 was returned to Southern green livery and used in general service for a couple of years based at Selhurst, after which the set entered preservation. No. 4732 is seen at Brighton. CJM
