Showing its as built condition with a DMBS at the frost set No. 7105 is viewed when brand new. These CEP sets were a modern version of the COR stock, having a gangway throughout, but incorporating more modern construction and design including a two-character route indicator in the front door. In refurbished condition, with the guards accommodation and brake vehicle repositioned to an intermediate vehicle, set No. 1512 is shown in BR blue and grey livery. In this form the two power cars became open saloon vehicles, with the only compartments remaining for passengers travelling in the brake vehicle. CJM



With formation of a London & South East business of the BR Board in the period immediately prior to the formation of Network South east, a handful of CEP units were repainted into LSE 'Jaffa Cake' livery, shown here on set 1594. CJM



After Network SouthEast was formed, sets were quickly repainted into the grey, red, white and blue house colours, seen here on set No. 1699 passing New Malden. This unit is one of three (1697-99) fitted with Mk6 power bogies. When this picture was taken a Group Standard headlight had been fitted in the door. CJM



A revision to the NSE livery was made under privatisation, when South West Trains, a part of the Stagecoach Bus operation took over services on the South Western Division. Set No. 1563 is seen in SWT colours at Southampton. CJM



During the massive refurbishment work of the CEP fleet, which was undertaken at BREL Swindon Works, the original Trailer Composite (TC) car was rebuilt to a Trailer Brake Composite, with a guards brake van and office placed about one third into the vehicle. Four first class compartments were formed at one end and a single standard class compartment between the luggage van and toilet cabin. TBC No. 70574 of set 1570 is shown, painted in NSE colours. Two different fleets of 3-CEP have been formed over the year, a batch numbered in the 14xx were formed in the early 1990s for Kent Coast branch line operation and a further set of conversions were made in the late 1990s numbered in the 11xx series to permit 11-car trains to be formed on the Hastings line. Carrying NSE livery, 3-car set No. 1402 is seen at Sherness. The three car converts had their TS vehicle removed. CJM



With its buffer car second from front, 4BEP unit (Class 412) No. 2302 is seen near Northam Junction, Southampton. These seven buffet refurbished sets were allocated to Fratton to provide refreshment facilities on the Waterloo-Portsmouth line, and are still in use today. CJM
