The prototype of the 1972 design high-density stock, this four-car set No. 4001, its sister 4002 and 2-car set No. 2001 paved the way for the modernisation of the EMU network in the 1970s and are the direct prototype for the Class 313, 314, 315, 507 and 508 fleets. Painted in all-over BR blue set No. 4001 stands at Wimbledon Park depot on July 18, 1971 soon after arrival from York Works. CJM

Carrying a Scharfenberg coupler, which prevented it from coupling to any other stock without an adapter, PEP No. 4001 stands in platform 15 at Waterloo on August 6, 1971 while carrying out trials. After some time in service, some windows were modified yo incorporate opening quarter lights. CJM

PEP unit interior, set out for 2+2 seating, using bus style seats. The design of the PEP was to provide transport for a high number of people, therefore a wide central gangway was incorporated, with roof mounted straps for standing passengers to hold. CJM

The 2-car PEP unit was released to traffic in unpainted, metal finish. The set was always used with at least one of the four car sets when in passenger service. After a short time in traffic the two car set entered a major period of trial and development running and one car of the set was exchanged with a four car driving vehicle. Set 2001 and 4002 pass Wimbledon West in June 1976 with a Waterloo-Hampton Court service. CJM
