Not in its usual environment, but this view of WC driving motor car No. S58 at Farnham in 1977 shows the vehicle off well. The car was used for a series of trials on the main line involving electronic equipment. This view shows the vehicle from its non-powered end. These are the only sets to have operated with red lights on both front and rear (for tunnel working) and after the mid-1960s to be allowed on the running line without a yellow warning end. Car S58 shown BR rail blue livery with silver ends. CJM

Waterloo & City driving car front end layout. The front end of these sets were unique in railway terms in having two red marker lights. The coupling was of the ward type without buffers. Other front end equipment consisted of main reservoir and brake pipes, DSD isolating cock below the drivers window window and control jumper sockets. As these sets did not operate in the open, no windscreen wipers were installed. CJM
