| A three and two car formation of Class 488 stock pass through Clapham Cutting powered by ED No. 73203 on a Victoria-Gatwick working in April 1989. These Mk2 converts to EMU trailer sets remained in service until early 2002 on the Gatwick service. CJM |
| The modification work to form the Class 488 sets from Mk2 air conditioned coaches was carried out at Eastleigh Works and was a major operation. The within set coupling was changed to the bar type, while handbrake equipment was fitted on outer cars. Full EMU type waist height multiple jumpers were fitted as were high level air pipes. Three car set No. 8307 is seen inside Stewarts Lane depot, painted in the revised Gatwick Express livery. CJM |
| Gatwick Express Class 488 interiors. On the left is the first class layout, very much in keeping with the Mk loco hauled vehicles. It followed the 2+1 low-density style, with each seat having a fixed table. On the right we see the standard class seating, again on par with Mk2 loco hauled stock. The 2+2 layout was followed, but luggage racks were provided throughout the formation to assist with luggage. Both: CJM |
| Sporting revised Gatwick express livery, with the flag logo on the front end, GLV No. 9102 stands at Gatwick at the head of a Victoria bound service. The rebuild of these vehicles saw three pairs of double leaf hinged doors incorporated on each side. A gangway connection was formed at the inner end to allow the conductor access to the train. CJM |
