Painted in as delivered BR green with coaching stock BR roundel on the side, the first member of the North London 3-car suburban sets, later classified 501 is seen when brand new. Note that at this time the only power collection was achieved from both bogies of the motor car (leading). CJM Collection



Repaints after the mid-1960s saw the Class 501s emerge in rail blue with full yellow warning ends, as shown here on set '175 near Acton while working a Broad Street-Richmond service. These units always had bars on the passenger door opening windows, due to restricted clearances in Hampstead Tunnel. CJM
