The first of the 1956 built sets led by DMBS No. 28371 is shown in as delivered BR green livery with lion on wheel crest on the body sides. As can be seen the passenger entry/exit is by two pairs of bi-parting sliding doors, while the driver and guard have a slam door at either end of the motor car. CJM Collection.

After deployment on the Merseyrail tunnel sections, the DTP directed that end emergency doors be installed, this work was undertaken at Horwich Works and changed the entire front end design. The buck-eye couplers were retained, but duplicate brake pipe and main reservoir air connections were fitted either side. Painted in blue 7 grey livery and carrying Merseyrail branding a three car set is seen at Wallasey with car 29153 nearest the camera. CJM.
