| In its as delivered 4-car condition, an eight-car formation of 508 stock departs from Tolworth on May 5, 1981 with a Chessington-Waterloo service. The leading set is No. 508032. These sets were delivered to the Southern Region to assist in a major shortage of rolling stock to cover until purpose-built SR Class 455 replacement stock was delivered. When the 508s were transferred to their intended home on the Mersey network, one TS vehicle was removed from each set and formed in a Class 455/7 set. CJM |
| With spare capacity on Merseyside, a batch of 12 Class 508s were sent south to Connex just after privatisation for use on Kent branch lines. The sets were refurbished at Eastleigh Works and painted in Connex yellow and white livery, set No. 508202 is seen at Sherness. CJM |
