Derived
from a 1947 demonstrator, the 0-6-0 Drewry fleet came about as part of
the BTC policy to rid steam traction from shunting yards in an attempt
to clean up inner city areas. The need for 'smaller' shunting power than
the standard (later Class 08) loco arose due to tight curvature in many
smaller yards as well as dock complex. The fleet are very similar to the
later BR built Class 03s. No Class 04s remain in mainstream operation,
but many are preserved. The fleet were originally painted in black, this
later changed to green and a handful emerged in standard BR rail blue.

Showing its original as delivered condition, No. D2212 has side and nose end guards for operation over tramway lines. This loco also shows the original type of 'saxo' exhaust pot and by the omission on anything but a coupling on the buffer beam , that the loco did not have train brakes. J.RUSH.
No. D2271 is now operated on The West Somerset Railway and sports a dark blue livery. The loco is fitted with vacuum brake equipment as can be seen from the tall vacuum pipe stand on the cab end buffer beam. On the body side the five ventilated doors are all removable to provide total access to the power unit. CJM.
The same loco as in the previous illustration, but this time viewed from the nose or radiator end. The large headlight on the top of the nose is a non-standard addition. The locos two electric marker lights are seen directly above the buffers. No. D2271 is seen at Minehead. CJM.
