Hot on the heels of 43301, the second AXC HST power car has been painted in the new corporate livery. Newly into traffic No. 43303 looks the part as it speeds south at the head of 9V65, the12.05 Edinburgh to Plymouth Cross Country service on 1 August 2008. the train is seen passing Northway, Gloucestershire.

Picture of the Day 2 August 2008

On Thursday 31 July 2008 Colas Rail Class 47/7 No. 47727 Rebecca worked train 5Z47 09.45 Eastleigh Works Marchwood MoD Sidings hauling Class 421 4-CIG No. 1884 and two translator coaches. The train was working to Marchwood to act as match wagons for Class 508 stock being hauled to Eastleigh Works for repair.

Picture of the Day 4 August 2008

Lincoln Central station will be closed from 19 July to 1 September 2008 to allow for a £55million upgrade of signals and track to take place. During this period, Northern Rail services on the Sheffield to Lincoln line are being terminated at Retford, with passengers for Gainsborough, Saxilby, and Lincoln being transferred forward by bus. On Saturday 2 August 2008, Merseyrail yellow-liveried Class 142 unit No. 142054 stands at Retford (low level) station having just brought in the 12.17 service from Scunthorpe. After moving forward and crossing tracks, the unit formed the 15.03 service to Adwick.

Picture of the Day 6 August 2008

Taken on 5 August 2008 between Settle Junction and Long Preston this is a view of BR Standard Class 7P No. 70013 Oliver Cromwell  in the rain, powering its main line test run train 5Z33, the 12.17 Carnforth to Carnforth via Hellifield and Blackburn. This coming Sunday, 10 August 2008, the loco will feature on a charter marking the ''End of Steam' in 1968.

Photographed in Canadian National's MacMillan Yard in Toronto on 3 August 2008, a pair of GEXR, former HLCX hire locos Nos. 6061 and 6522 stand at the head of the export train from EMD London which operated as GEXR train 432. After the barrier wagon, used as a coupling transition vehicle, the train is formed of Fastline Freight No. 66303, ECR 77024 and 77028, then DLC No. DE6313F, ECR Nos. 77023, 77027, 77025, DLC No. DE6312F and ECR No. 77026 on the rear. The train was bound for the Port of Toronto from where the cargo will be loaded on the Jumbo ship MV Daniella, bound for Newport and Rotterdam.

EWS Class 66/0 No. 66166 working the china clay service from Tavistock Junction (Plymouth) to Bescot failed in Ashchurch station early in the morning of 9 August 2008. Rescue came in the form of Freightliner No. 66610 which coupled to the rear of the train and hauled it wrong line to Cheltenham where it was placed in the loop track on the down line. Many trains were delayed by this problem. The FHH '66' is seen pulling south through the northbound platform at Ashchurch.

Picture of the Day 11 August 2008

The 40th anniversary of the running of the final standard gauge steam hauled passenger train in the UK was operated on Sunday 10 August 2008 when a 're-run' of the Fifteen Guinea Special or 1T57 was operated. The modern day 1T57 was hauled by 8F No. 48151 from Liverpool to Manchester, recently fully restored Class 7P No. 70013 Oliver Cromwell from Manchester to Carlisle via the S&C and Black Five Nos. 45407 and 45231 on the return run. The outward run with No. 70013 is seen passing Ribblehead.

Picture of the Day 12 August 2008

EWS Class 66/0 No. 66013 emits a trace of exhaust as it approaches Hillfield Tunnel, Newport on the afternoon of Monday 11 August 2008 with the 16.22 (6M75) Alexandra Dock Junction to Warrington ‘Enterprise’ freight service. The train is formed of loaded scrap metal wagons bound for Liverpool Alexandra Dock, and will run via Llanwern, where a rake of covered steel wagons will be added for the journey North.

On Monday 11 August, three Class 97/3 (37s) are recorded passing Toton on a test train. Nos. 97301 and 97303 lead with No. 97304 dead on the rear, forming train 5Z97 the 09.45 Derby to Derby via Sheffield.

On Saturday 16 August the Spitfire Railtours charter from Wolverhampton to Cleethorpes as special 1Z45 operated, motive power was provided by DRS Class 37s Nos. 37059 and 37423 with DRS Class 47 No. 47712 on the rear. The train was formed of de-branded 'Stowbart' Mk3 stock. The train is seen passing Scunthorpe.

On Saturday 16 August 2008, due to the failure of DRS Class 66 No. 66412 at Crewe on the southbound working, Class 57s Nos. 57010 and 57011 piloted the overnight Carlisle to Daventry service. The locos later operated the northbound intermodal train as far as Carlisle, before returning light back to Crewe. The triple headed train is seen departing from Preston.

As part of Virgin Trains 'blockade busting' operation, on Sunday 17 August 2008 an extra 1Z40 11.00 London Euston to Wolverhampton and 1Z41 18.48 operated via the Chiltern route formed of Mk3 stock powered by a Class 57. The northbound train was headed by No. 57313 and is seen on Saunderton Bank. The return train was powered by No. 57301.

With rain threatening, Cotswold Rail Class 47 No. 47828 Joe Strummer speeds under the A46 road and approaches Ashchurch station on 19 August 2008, as 'The Marauder' 5Z60 Gloucester to Glasgow Works service. The consist of two 'blue-and-grey' barier cars Nos. 975867 and 975864 and three InterCity coaches Nos. 5897, 5812 and 5779 are understood to be bound for Inverness.

In readiness for the start of their proposed new Portbury to Ratcliffe - on Soar / Rugeley Power Station coal service, Fastline Freight began operating route learning trains to Oxford in mid-August 2008. On the first day of operation (Monday 18 August,) Class 56/3 No. 56302 Wilson Walshe arrives at Oxford with the 08.08 (0Z56) from Derby Chaddeston. In the background, Class 66/5 No. 66562 waits at a signal check with the 10.55 (4V60) Calvert to Bath / Bristol 'binliner.'

On Tuesday 19 August 2008, Advenza Freight Class 57 No. 57005 made one of its rare trips to the West Country, powering an HST powercar move from Bristol to Laira. After arrival at Laira, the loco returned as 5Z74 11.40 Laira to Bristol SPM hauling powercar No. 43159 and barrier No. 6348. The unusual move is seen approaching Rockstone Bridge, Dawlish

On Saturday 23 August 2008 Pathfinder Tours operated the Dorset Coast Explorer from Crewe to Weymouth. Power was provided by WCRC Class 33s Nos. 33207 and 33025. The train is seen just south of Abbotswood Junction after rejoining the mainline to Cheltenham on the outward leg.

Direct Rail Services Class 57 No. 57010 ran light loco late last week to Newport Docks to pick up recently arrived Fastline Class 66/3 No. 66303. The loco had arrived from EMD in Canada at Newport Docks on board Jumbo ship, MV Daniella from the Port of Toronto. On 26 August 2008, No. 57010 hauled the new arrival as the 0Z28 14.00 Newport Docks to Carlisle as far as Crewe. It is seen passing Ponthir running rather late.

On Tuesday 26 August 2008, due to ongoing engineering works at Rugby blocking the West Coast route, the after Royal Mail train from Willesden to Warrington was diverted by way of the Great Western main line, Oxford, Banbury to Coventry and the Midlands. Operated by GBRf and hauled by Virgin Trains No. 57303 the service is seen passing Kings Sutton.

Picture of the Day 30 August 2008

While waiting for two modern traction charters to pass along the Dawlish Sea Wall on Saturday 30 August 2008, the real highlight of the day turned up! A pairing of a First Great Western Class 142 No. 142004 and Arriva Trains Wales branded Class 150/2 No. 150267 forming the 10.20 Exmouth to Paignton service. The train was booked to be formed of a single Class 142 but due to serious over crowding at Exeter (with passengers travelling to Dartmouth Carnival) the Class 150 was added. The train, running some 20 minutes late is seen soon after departure from Dawlish Warren rounding the Sea Wall at Langstone Rock.

From Saturday 30 August to Sunday 28 September 2008 there will be no Midland Metro services operating into the Wolverhampton St Georges tram stop. This is to allow the painting of Wishbone Bridge which is located where the tracks cross the Wolverhampton Ring Road near the city centre. Between Saturday 30 August and Tuesday 2 September services will terminate at the Priestfield tram stop, and from Wednesday 3 September onwards services will be extended to The Royal tram stop. Metro services will operate normally between Priestfield / The Royal and Birmingham Snow Hill tram stops. Tram No. 09 was photographed on 31 August 2008 painted in the new pink and silver colours.
