Picture of the Day 1 August 2009 The final 'Desiro' Class 350/2 unit No. 350267 entered service with London Midland on Friday 31 July 2009, working the 07.32 (2W59) Northampton to London Euston service. Later on in its first day, the new unit stands at Euston with the 19.13 (1N27) service to Northampton. The unit entered service without having run any previous test runs, and covered 662 miles of trouble free running on its first day. A true credit to the Siemens Desiro product line. John Binch |

Picture of the Day 3 August 2009 Chiltern Railways Class 168 ‘Clubman’ unit No. 168005 approaches Tyseley on the afternoon of Sunday 2 August 2009, with the 14.20 London Marylebone to Birmingham Snow Hill service. The ticket office at Tyseley station was badly damaged following a robbery of 5 July 2009 and has not reopened since. |

Picture of the Day 4 August 2009 Making what is thought to be only the second appearance of a Class 57/3 in the Eastleigh area No. 57302 Virgil Tracey approaches Eastleigh station on 4 August 2009 hauling off-lease Class 321 sets Nos. 321429 and 321407 as train 5O21 the 09.21 Bletchley to Eastleigh. However, the train is reported to have started from Wembley Royal Mail terminal after the '321s' worked south from Bletchley under their own power the previous evening. The Class 321s have been displaced by the recent full introduction of Class 350/2 Desiro sets on London Midland services and will be stored at Eastleigh. |

Picture of the Day 6 August 2009 Flagship locomotive of the Northampton and Lamport Railway (NLR), Class 45 No. 45118 The Royal Artilleryman, has left the railway for RVEL Derby for the repair of vandalism damage sustained whilst on the NLR. The photographer reports that It is highly unlikely that the locomotive will return to the NLR because of ongoing concern with vandalism and lack of secure facilities on the railway. |

Picture of the Day 7 August 2009 The 3’ 6’’ gauge Great Orme Tramway in Llandudno differs from most other funicular railways in the world in that the cars are permanently attached to the cable, with their speed being controlled by engine drivers in the winding house building. The only other such system like it to also operate on public streets is the Elevador da Bica line in Lisbon, Portugal. On 6 August 2009, cars Nos. 6 and 7 pass at the crossing loop between Halfway (visible in the distance) and Summit stations on the upper section of the line. |

Picture of the Day 13 August 2009 The Railway Centre is always keen to support some of the more progressive photography. This image of LNWR 2-4-0 Precedent No. 790 Hardwicke is an excellent example of what can be done with a little thought. It shows the loco at the NRM York being turned on the turntable. Our photographer placed his camera in manual mode on a tripod and placed it on the turntable bed, opened the shutter for 30s at f22 with the recording speed set to 100ISO and let his tripod take a ride!. The result is quite stunning. |

Picture of the Day 14 August 2009 Freshly overhauled and repainted at Eastleigh Works, DRS Class 37/0 No. 37059 and Class 37/6 No. 37608 operated a stock move from Eastleigh Works to Crewe on 13 August formed of three of the newly formed 'Ocean Liner' passenger set. The train is seen passing Pangbourne heading south on the GW main line running around three hours late. |

Picture of the Day 16 August 2009 Yet another restored Class 56 will soon return to traffic on the main line with Hanson Rail - No. 56114 - it is seen being hauled by No. 56311 through Wichnor on 14 August 2009 running as 0Z57 from Wansford on the Nene Valley Railway to Washwood Heath where final painting, fitting OTMR and main line certification will take place. No. 56114 will be renumbered to 56314. |

Picture of the Day 17 August 2009 A DRS/Rail Blue Charter operated from Chesterfield to Paignton and return on Saturday 15 August 2009. The train was powered by DRS Class 47s Nos. 47802 and 47501, the returning train is seen approaching Aller, west of Newton Abbot. After departure from Paignton a number of problems were experienced with the leading loco and this was removed at Exeter St Davids, With No. 47501 working train forward on its own. The defective Class 47 was stabled on Exeter DMU depot until 17 August when it was collected by Class 37/4 No. 37423 and returned to Crewe for repair.. |

Picture of the Day 20 August 2009 20 August 2009 was the annual Dawlish Air Show, part of Dawlish Carnival Week This year saw around 100,000 people visit the town to see an outstanding air show featuring some 10 helicopter and fixed wing air displays. The highlight of the show was the Avro Vulcan flying in formation with the Red Arrows. First Great Western provided a number of extra trains on the Exeter to Newton Abbot corridor, with an HST and loco-hauled set operating shuttle services. The loco hauled train was formed of five Mk2s top and tailed by Class 67s Nos. 67005 and 67025. The first 'up' loco-hauled working, the 12.15 Newton Abbot to Exeter is seen approaching Dawlish, with huge crowds already lining the sea wall. |
