A truly historic moment! The end of an era, as ex GWR No. 7200 leaves what's left of Swindon Works, on its way to Quainton Road, to be reunited with its boiler. People often consider the Class 508s as 'modern' EMUS, however it is amazing to record that it was 26 years ago that the first two sets Nos. 508009 and 508008 entered passenger service, forming the 10.04 Waterloo to Shepperton on 17 December 1979. The historic first working is seen at Waterloo. No. 508009 is now No. 508205, one of the trio shown going 'off lease' in yesterdays picture of the day.

With the withdrawal of the relatively modern Class 442s in January, it seems a little ironic that slam door 3CIG units on the Lymington Branch are destined to outlive them for quite some time.
