Picture of the Day 2 December 2007 With Rugeley Power Station providing the backdrop, Freightliner Heavy Haul Class 66/5 No. 66548 slogs up the gradient towards Rugeley Town station on 30 November 2007 with the 11.22 empty coal hoppers to Leeds Hunslet. Up to one fifth of the country’s electricity is generated by the Trent Valley power stations. Therefore, supplying the power stations with fuel is big business for the rail freight companies. Picture of the Day 7 December 2007 The public enquiry into the proposed Phase 2 extension of the Nottingham Express Transit system to Chilwell and Clifton began on 6 November 2007 and is expected to last around six weeks, which should see a major extension to the Nottingham local tram system. On 7 December 2007, Bombardier-built tram No. 212 William Booth heads towards Weekday Cross as it departs the Station Street terminus with the 12.05 service to Phoenix Park. |

Picture of the Day 8 December 2007 The unique-liveried Class 47 No. 47832 painted in Victa-Westlink black and white was used on 8 December 2007 to power a Hertfordshire Rail Tours charter from Southend to Lincoln. On the rear of the train was DRS-liveried No. 47802. The train is seen pulling into Basildon on the outward working. |

Picture of the Day 9 December 2007 Here it is - the first view of the new National Express East Coast livery, as applied to a HST set with powercars 43238 and 43300 on the rear. The train operated on the first day of the new franchise on 9 December 2007 from Edinburgh Craigentinny to Edinburgh Craigentinny via Kirkcaldy, Dundee, Perth and Stirling. It is seen passing Burntisland on its outward run. On Monday 10 December the set is booked to form the 09.30 Edinburgh - London Kings Cross. |

Picture of the Day 13 December 2007 You don't often get five locos on a two wagon train!. This amazing sight was captured at Rivenhall near Witham, Essex on 12 December 2007 and consists of Class 37 No. 37601, CLass 20s Nos. 20307 and 20313, CLass 57 No. 57009 two RHTT wagons and Class 37 No. 37667 on the rear. The two 20s plus the 37 on the rear were detached at shenfield to carry on to Willesden. |

Picture of the Day 24 December 2007 In common with many of the UK light railways, the Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway operated 'Santa Specials' over the weekend prior to Christmas, The PDSR made this a major attraction for the young and old alike with a pantomime and Santa making a special visit. Picture of the Day 27 December 2007 On 22 December 2007 the very rare sight of a pair of HST power cars operating as a 'loco' took place on East Midlands Trains when Nos. 43073 and 43083 led No. 43044 and its train as the 5Z57 10.20 London St Pancras to Derby Etches Park, power car No. 43047 was on on the rear of the formation. The unusual working is seen at Leicester. |

Picture of the Day 28 December 2007 On 27 December 2007, due to engineering work on the West Coast Main Line, the afternoon Willesden PRDC to Warrington First/GBRf-Royal Mail service was routed by the GW main line and Oxford to reach the West Midlands. The train was formed of Class 325 No. 325011 and piloted by Class 47 No. 47805. Well after dark, the train is seen passing through Taplow at speed. Our photographer, one of the masters at night action photography, captured this image, his exposure details were: Raw format exposure, 1/180 @f2 at 1600 ISO using an 85mm f1.8 lens, the camera was a Canon EOS 5D. Raw conversion using Adobe CS3 plus selected levels adjustments and colour balance changes, plus limited noise reduction using Noise Ninja. |
