Picture of the Day 1 December 2008 From 21 November until 23 December 2008, GBRf have introduced five extra ‘Christmas Royal Mail’ diagrams to run on an as required basis between Glasgow and London via Warrington and the WCML using Class 325 units. On Monday 1 December, a three unit formation led by No. 325016 approaches Rugeley Trent Valley with the 10.12 (1M20) Glasgow (Shieldmuir) to London (Willesden Railnet) working. |

Picture of the Day 2 December 2008 1 December 2008 was a good day for slam door EMU stock in the Bournemouth area. In addition to one of the CIG units being recorded on a turning move, South West Trains Class 73 No. 73235 hauled 4-VEP No. 3417 as train 5Z51 the 12.40 Wimbledon Park to Bournemouth T&RSMD. The locomotive and stock being required at Weymouth as part of 'regenative brake testing' later in the week. The train is seen near the long closed Bournmouth Central Goods. |

Picture of the Day 5 December 2008 East Midlands Trains have continued the practice of recent years of running extra trains between Nottingham and Lincoln Central to serve the Christmas Market at Lincoln. This year (5-6 December 2008) a HST set was used for the first time. On Friday 5 December, Class 43s Nos. 43047 (nearest the camera) and 43074 make a rare appearance amid the quintessential Midland Railway scene at Lowdham with the 10.17 Lincoln to Nottingham service. |

Picture of the Day 6 December 2008 The first of the 2008 'Yuletide Torbay Expresses' operated on 6 December 2008, when 'King' No. 6024 powered train 1Z27, 09.21 Bristol Temple Meads to Kingswear. Running a few minutes ahead of schedule, the train is seen passing Dawlish in what can only be described as a perfect winters morning. |

Picture of the Day 10 December 2008 First/GBRf Class 66 No. 66723 is photographed near Pershore in between Evesham and Worcester on the Cotswold line on 10 December 2008, towing three Class 87's bound for Bulgaria. Nos. 87006 87003 and 87034 are seen in the convoy being hauled by No. 66723 recently named "Chinook" by the Army. The rainbow coloured train is bound for Crewe Electric depot before heading to Hull docks by road then boarding a ship for Eastern Europe. |

Picture of the Day 12 December 2008 Southeastern showed off Class 395 No. 395002 to invited guests at St Pancras International station on 12 December 2008, to mark the start of the 'countdown' to the launch of 'Southeastern Highspeed' on 13 December 2009 when a fleet of 29 Class 395 sets will be introduced on a new Kent to London St Pancras international service operating over High Speed 1 at speeds of up to 140mph. On 12 December set No. 395002 formed the first 'official' passenger train between Ashford and St Pancras International on which Transport Minister Andrew Adonis travelled. At present four Class 395s are in the UK based at Ashford, squadron deliveries will commence in spring 2009. Set No. 395002 is seen in the new Southeastern platform at St Pancras International. |

Picture of the Day 14 December 2008 With the start of the winter timetable on 14 December 2008, the 'Robin Hood' line finally got it's long awaited Sunday service, when East Midlands Trains units, Nos. 153319 and 153374 left Nottigham with the 07.53 to Mansfield woodhouse. Greeted by Robin Hood and his merry band they are seen standing in the old goods shed at Mansfield Woodhouse where they formed the 08.37 back to Nottingham. There are ten trains each way, of which four go through to Worksop, and the rest terminating at Mansfield Woodhouse. |

Picture of the Day 15 December 2008 It was not only in the UK that the new timetable was introduced on Sunday 14 December, but in virtually all other European countries as well. Vast changes have been seen all over. In Germany, the ever popular Class 218s and other older classes now see far less work. No. 218 199 8 is seen at Buchloe on 18 February 2008 with a southbound passenger service (possibly a late running Regional Express for Oberstdorf). |

Picture of the Day 17 December 2008 Almost a matching set: Class 43 No. 43050 heads a rake of Mk. 3 HST coaching stock in the latest Stagecoach/East Midlands Trains livery at Nottingham on Monday 15 December 2008. Only No. 43075 at the rear spoils the corporate image. The train formed the 11.28 HST service to London St. Pancras International. On the left, Class 153 No. 153308 forms the 11.15 service to Matlock. These services had been extended from Derby at the start of the Winter 2008 timetable the previous day. |

One daily diagram regularly produces a pair, in this case the 10.01 Oxford-Paddington seen approaching the Slough station stop on 17 December 2008 with No. 180104 leading No. 180105. The pair splits after arrival at Paddington with one unit working the 11.22 to Great Malvern and the other going to the depot at Old Oak Common. |

Picture of the Day 31 December 2008 Taken at Newport on 29 December 2008, Arriva Trains Wales operated Class 57/3 No. 57316 shows an interim Arriva livery without 'swirls' and branding. The loco was on the rear of the northbound 16.18 Cardiff to Holyhead. It is suggested the reason for the loco emerging from the paintshop before completion, was that No. 57314 has had a traction motor problem |
