Picture of the Day 3 December 2010 On the rare occasion a test train visits the terminus of Redditch, our photographer usually pops out to record the activity. Picture of the Day 8 December 2010 The new order of the day on the London Overground Gospel Oak-Barking line is a fleet of Bombardier-built Class 172s. Eight sets are allocated to Willesden to work this duty. After riding on the route on 8 December 2010, the trains are best described as 'rough'. In all the years I have studied and travelled on new trains, I have never experienced such a rough and uncomfortable ride. This was not only due to the poor track, but the trains power units and transmission. Every time the driver shut off power the entire coach shuddered with a load bang and clatter emitting from the underside. If the engine had fallen off of the transmission seized, I would not have been surprised. However, we have what we have, set No. 172006 is seen arriving at Gospel Oak with a service from Barking before forming the 10.35 service back to Barking |

Picture of the Day 18 December 2010 After waiting more than 25 years to get even snow laying on the Dawlish Sea Wall with the sun shining and a train running, today was the day when everything fell into place. After a fall of around 2in of snow in the night, a bright morning followed. So, after a careful walk to the Sea Wall, a short wait produced a westbound Voyager forming the 06.42 Birmingham New Street to Paignton, captured approaching Kennaway Tunnel, with Dawlish station in the background. After about an hour the sun started to melt the snow, I wonder how long it will be before we get a blanket of snow on the Sea Wall again? |

Picture of the Day 22 December 2010 Heavy snow on Saturday 18 December 2010 followed by sub-zero temperatures brought chaos to the West Midlands rail system. The situation was compounded by a further snowfall on the afternoon of Monday 20 December. The London Midland operated Birmingham Cross-City line was particularly badly affected with many services suffering either severe delay or cancellation. One train that did run on time, however, was the 10.22 Longbridge to Four Oaks service on Tuesday the 21st, and is photographed passing Northfield under a leaden sky formed of the inevitable Class 323 unit, in this instance, No. 323222. |

Picture of the Day 31 December 2010 For the last picture of 2010, we turn the clock back some 54 years to June 1957, when BR green-liveried 'large standard' diesel-electric shunting loco No. 13075 is seen shunting oil tanks in the Birmingham area. This loco was later renumbered to D3075 and in the early 1970s was renumbered again to 08061. Note the 'target' number 18 on the end, the oil lamp on the near lamp iron and no wasp warning ends. |
