Picture of the Day 5 February 2008 Ex-Connex "Thumper" unit No. 1125 is seen at Medstead & Four Marks station on the Mid-Hants Railway, running as an empty stock working due to on-going internal restoration. The image was recorded on 2 February 2008 and the train movement was to celebrate the 35 years since BR closed the 'Mid-Hants' line in 1973. The "Thumpers" or BR Class 205s were the last type of train to work in passenger service on the route. |

Picture of the Day 6 February 2008 On the evening of 5 February 2008, the 19.05 Paddington to Penzance formed with powercars Nos. 43177 and 43165 failed at Newton Abbot. As no locomotives were available for the rescue, two powercars Nos. 43134 and 43146 were sent 1Z99 from Laira to Newton Abbot to collect the failed train which had terminated. Its passengers were taken forward by another HST which was in the area with an empty stock move. This most amazing view of three powercars at the head of a HST formation was recorded just before departure at 00.37 (when most photographers were tucked up in bed!) |

The EWS-painted loco worked two out and back trips from Bury to Ramsbottom in conjunction with training new guards on the railway. |

Picture of the Day 13 February 2008 DRS Class 37s Nos. 37038 and 37606 are seen stabled in Platform 1 at Taunton during the evening of 12 February 2008. The locos were returning from Exeter to Crewe and recessed overnight at Taunton. The local Taunton Trains website www.tauntontrains.co uk keeps a handle on all rail activity in the Taunton area and also hosts a special page at http://tauntontrains.fotopic.net/c260727.html which shows a huge selection of locos and trains parked in platform 1. |

Picture of the Day 14 February 2008 On 13 February the VSOE operated a charter from London Victoria to Bath, travelling out via Basingstoke and Westbury and returning via the Berks & Hants line. Power was provided between London and Westbury by ex-Southern MN Class 4-6-2 No. 35028 Clan Line with a Class 67 working the train both ways between Westbury and Bath. The outward train, 1Z82 the 10.35 London Victoria - Bath passes over Hurstbourne Viaduct. |

Picture of the Day 17 February 2008 We go to Welland, Ontario, Canada for our Picture of the Day today. taken on 16 February 2008, the view shows the last eight GT36CW passenger locomotives for the Algerian Railroad which have been assembled at the ITS Rail facility in Welland, Ontario. The train is in the facility yard and at the far end is repaired EMD SD-70 NO. CN 8835, This loco had an on board electrical fire soon after completion at the London plant and was returned to Wellend for repair. The train above then proceeded to Port Robinson, Ontario rail yard where CN 8835 was turned on a wye to face forward. It then went onto Toronto and then Halifax for shipping. |

Motive power was provided by Class 47 No. 47237 and barrier car No. 6336 was formed between the loco and powercar. The move, which departed Laira at 11.30 as train 5Z44 is seen passing Natton near Ashchurch. |

Much of the area around the station is presently like a building site. On 19 February 2008, Freightliner Intermodal Class 66 No. 66541 passes the work and approaches the station while powering 4L93, the 10.08 Birmingham Lawley Street to Felixstowe. |

Picture of the Day 24 February 2008 The application of Arriva CrossCountry livery on Class 170 stock is expanding rapidly. Unit No. 170116 entered service in mid-February 2008 and was followed a few days later by set No. 170102. Repainting is being done at EWS Toton and Marcroft depots. On Friday 22 February 2008, showing off the new Arriva CrossCountry livery, set No. 170116 approaches Derby forming the 13.13 Birmingham New Street to Nottingham service. |
