Picture of the Day 2 January 2009

With the new Cunard flagship, the 90,000 ton Queen Victoria looming in the background DRS Class 47 No. 47832 pulls past in the gloom 97 mins late with the 1Z79 10.00 Southampton Western Docks to Manchester Piccadilly boat train on 2 January 2009. This was the first boat train to depart from the Western Docks in more than 14 years.

Class 40 action was seen on the main line on 3 January 2009 when East Lancs-based No. 40145 powered 'The East Lancs Ambassador' charter from Rawtenstall to Edinburgh. The train is seen approaching Carlisle.

Picture of the Day 4 January 2009

Due to a shortage of CrossCountry power cars on Sunday 4 January 2009, ex works National Express Class 43 No. 43295 was used by Cross Country and formed the 08.30 Leeds to Plymouth and 15.21 Plymouth to Leeds, operating with set No. XC04 and XC power car No. 43301. The unusual west country visitor is seen at Exeter on its return working to Leeds.

Cotswold Rail Class 47 No. 47810 Captain Sensible hauling First Great Westen Class 43 powercars Nos. 43097 and 43165 arrive at Loughborough to enter the Brush Works on 5 January 2009 forming train 5Z46 from Bristol St Phillips Marsh. Following the refurbishment of the FGW Class 43 fleet and the fitting of MTU power units, Brush Traction has an ongoing role in fleet maintenance.

Meeting of the 170s. Service trains between Cardiff Central and Nottingham pass, at a closing speed of around 150 mph, just to the north of Ashchurch station on Tuesday, 6 January 2009. No. 170107 (left) forms the 11.45 from Cardiff, whilst No. 170523 (right) operates the 11.08 reverse trip. Both wear temporary Arriva Cross Country branding over previous (different) coats, with unit end detail differences between the two styles of Class 170 clearly visible.

A busy scene is recorded at an icy Hazel Grove station on the afternoon of Monday 5 January 2009. Class 150/2 unit No. 150222 paired with Class 150/1 No. 150146 occupy Platform 1 (left) having just brought in the 14.23 Northern Rail service from Preston. Standing at Platform 2, Class 156 No. 156424 arrives with an e.c.s. working ready to form the 16.04 service to Barrow-in-Furness.

Colas Rail Class 47 No. 47739 Robin of Templecombe was used on 9 January 2009 to power stock transfer move 5Z48, the12.20 Marchwood MoD to Eastleigh Works formed of Mk3s Nos. 12017, 12059, 12094 and 11040. The train is seen entering Eastleigh Works, while a CrossCountry 'Voyage' set passes in the 'up' direction.

Picture of the Day 10 January 2009

Fastline Class 66/3 No. 66304 powering a diverted Avonmouth-Ratcliffe coal train, gave the very rare sight of a coal train traversing the London end of the Great Western Main Line on Saturday 10 January 2009. It is also understood to be the first Fastline Class 66 working on this part of the route. The train is seen approaching Burnham station.

Picture of the Day 11 January 2009

Photographed on 10 January 2009 this view shows the first working on the Great Central Railway of a diesel hauled service to have steam heat provided by a re-patriated ex Irish Railway steam heat generator coach. This coach, No. 3178 is seen behind 'Peak' No. D123. Sadly by about 15.00 the steam generator had failed, and no more heat was provided on what was a bitterly cold day.

Aylesbury Vale Parkway was officially opened by Adrian Shooter, Chairman of Chiltern Railways and Val Letheren, cabinet member for transport at Buckinghamshire County Council on Monday 15 December 2008. The station is located 2.5 miles North of the existing station on the freight line to Claydon L.N.E. Junction, which is part of the former Great Central Railway mainline. One month later on Monday 12 January 2009, Class 165/0 unit No. 165002 stands at the new station with the 10.30 service to London Marylebone.

Picture of the Day 14 January 2009

It has been a long time coming but at last on 14 January 2009, DB Schenker operated a container train to Fratton, where new hard standing has been built adjacent to the former fuel road. The train comprised two FIA container flats which were loaded with Lubricants in containers. Class 66 No. 66046 was entrusted with the job and is seen running around the train in Fratton yard.

On Saturday 17 January 2009, South West Trains Class 423 VEP No. 3417 was officially handed over to the Bluebell Railway.at East Grinstead. The unit was hauled by SWT Class 73 No. 73109 as the 1Z66, the 10.50 Woking to East Grinstead. The train is seen at Riddlesdown near Woldingham.

The summer of 2009 will continue to see the use of the two ex-Silverlink-liveried Class 150/1s by First Great Western, being recorded frequently in the Bristol, Devon and Cornwall area. On Friday 16 January 2009, set No. 150121 poses under the night light at Exeter St Davids after arriving with the 18.35 Paignton service and awaits transfer to the nearby depot.

Ex-Southern Bulleid No. 35028 Clan Line makes an impressive start away from Eastleigh after being routed through the platform line with the first steam powered of the year on 17 January 2009. The train was running as 1Z82, the 10.26 London Victoria to Southampton East Docks.

London Midland 'City' liveried Class 170 No. 170506 stands at Gloucester forming a shuttle service to Worcester on 16 January 2009. Class 170s of 'Turbostar' units now sport a wide diversity of liveries and operate throughout the UK.

Picture of the Day 21 January 2009

The Mersey Rail (yellow electric) livery is now extinct. The last train in the distinctive yellow livery, Class 142 unit No. 142055 has been repainted into Northern Rail livery at Newton Heath depot. On Monday 9 June 2008, the unit runs along the Goyt Valley near Marple with the 13.46 Manchester Piccadilly to Sheffield service.

With so few Class 60s left in traffic it is unusual to see one at Slough on a typical day, and certainly it is unusual to see one hauling Freightliner-owned wagons. This view shows the Acton-West Drayton aggregate working. The train heads west from Acton as far as Slough up loop where the loco runs round before taking the train back east to the depot at West Drayton. It used to run round at Langley but now runs to Slough due to the extra length of the train. No. 60019 is seen on 21 January 2009.

Described by the photographer as "The Bristol Temple Meads Gas Chamber", this was the scene which greeted passengers at the station during the evening of 20 January 2009, when Network Rail Class 31 No. 31233 was getting ready to set off on an evenings test train. 50 plus commuters waiting for their train were seen gasping for breath.

The first locomotive to carry the new DB Schenker livery is Class 59/2 No. 59206. The locomotive was repainted at Toton depot and operated light to York on Thursday 22 January 2009. On Friday evening 23 January 2009 the loco was named John F. Yeoman Rail Pioneer in a ceremony at the National Railway Museum, York to mark the change from EWS to DB Schenker. The locomotive is named after John Foster Yeoman, the man who masterminded the introduction of private owner stock and locomotives to the UK Nationalised rail industry in the mid 1980s for Mendip Stone operator Foster Yeoman. The red livery applied to 59206 is the same colour as applied to DBs motive power in Germany.

Major engineering work over the weekend of 24/25 January in the Wandsworth Town-Putney station area saw a number of engineers trains powered by DBS and GBRf power. Trying to look more like a steam engine than an electro-diesel Class 73/2s Nos. 73205 and 73209 start away from Putney station with an 'up' engineers train bound for the worksite at Wandsworth Town.

With the opening today (26 January 2009) of the new East Midlands Parkway, this view shows the 12.28 East Midlands Trains service from Nottingham to London St Pancras International calling at the up main line platform at 12.39. The cooling towers in the background belong to Ratcliffe on Soar power station.

Northern Rail has introduced three Class 180 ‘Adelante’ units on two daytime diagrams. The units which are based at Newton Heath and currently work (train A) the 06.53 Blackpool North to Hazel Grove, 09.33 Hazel Grove to Preston and then the 14.23 Preston to Hazel Grove and 16.33 return (all via Chorley,) and (train B). the 09.22, 13.22, 17.19 and 21.22 Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North (via Wigan) and return services. On Monday 26 January 2009, No. 180103 accelerates away from its stop at Kirkham and Wesham and passes the Fox’s Biscuits factory with the 13.22 Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North service.

After seeing the loco at the NRM York earlier in the week as the Picture of the Day, we now see DB Schenker-liveried No. 59206 John F Yeoman Rail Pioneer in action. On 27 January is is seen approaching Newbury on the Berks & Hants main line powering train 7A09, the 07.12 Merehead to Acton.

On 30 January DBS tries to imitate the US railroads by powering train 6Y41, the 09.02 Eastleigh to Hoo Junction with no less than five Class 66s. Led by Nos. 66108, 66227, 66034, 66122 and 66200 the train approaches Woking formed of a long welded rail set.

On 30 January 2009, following several months of modification work, Europhoenix unveiled their demonstrator locomotive No. 86247. The loco has been modified to demonstrate the types of alteration possible for export locomotives. Fitted with modern-standard light-clusters and roof-mounted headlights to comply with European standards, in place of the original headcode-mounted marker lights and central headlight. The loco will also be fitted with twin Faiveley pantographs, as another example of the possible modifications under the Europhoenix program. Modifications to traction and internal equipment will be carried out according to customers requirements.. Europhoenix has also unveiled the first former Class 86 locomotive for export (86248), now numbered 0450 001-7, the loco is destined for open-access operator Floyd in Hungary This locomotive features an alternative modified headlight arrangement to comply with Hungarian standards, and has been given a comprehensive examination at Long Marston. The loco is due to move to Crewe for live testing on Tuesday 3 February, and handover to Floyd for export. A second locomotive is undergoing modification for Floyd and will follow to Hungary in March. Both locos are seen rolled-out at Long Marston on 30 January 2009.
