Picture of the Day 1 January 2010

For the start of 2010, we have a 'blast from the past' with a view taken some 28 years ago on 9 January 1982 at West London Junction (between Queenstown Road and Clapham Junction), showing an up Chessington to Waterloo service formed of Class 508 set No. 508024. The second week of 1982 was a rough one for the London area, with heavy snow falls causing major travel chaos. The train is passing under West London Junction signal box which has long since closed and been demolished.

A little bit of preservation for the second day of 2010, Great Western 2-6-2T No. 5552 passes Charlies Gate on New Years Day 2010 on the Bodmin & Wenford Railway powering the 12.40 Bodmin Parkway to Bodmin General. Our photographer said "The light and steam were just sublime".

Picture of the Day 3 January 2010

The place to be on 2 January 2009 looks to have been the West Somerset Railway, when this interesting train was captured. It is formed of Class 47 No. 47840 (D1661) leading a short wheelbase brake coach, a small crane, a Turbot wagon, Class 25 No. D7523 and a goods brake van on the rear. The train was the 13.05 Minehead to Bishops Lydeard and is seen passing Castle Hill near Williton.

A most unusual stock move for National Express East Anglia took place on 4 January 2010, when DRS Class 20/3s Nos. 20304 and 20301 powered train 5V91 from Norwich Crown Point to Ilford depot formed of five Mk3 passenger coaches. The stock move is seen passing Kelvedon.

The South Eastern domestic service over High Speed 1 (HS1) is now running a full timetable service at up to 140mph. Set No. 395001 passes Rainham on 2 January 2010 forming the 10.53 Margate to London St Pancras International. In the background 'Electrostar' No. 357009 passes with a Fenchurch Street to Southend Central service.

Picture of the Day 6 January 2010

With some of the worst snow and ice seen in the south and west for many years, this was the view at Stoford on the approach to Yeovil on 6 January 2010. The SWT service forming the 12.10 Exeter St Davids to Salisbury is formed of the lowest and highest numbered Class 159's Nos. 159001 and 159108. Due to the adverse weather conditions, South West Trains operated an emergency shuttle timetable on the Waterloo-Exeter route for most of the day. Note also the coupling protecting bag fitted on the front end.

The snow conditions continue to provide some interesting rail images in the UK. On 6 January 2010, a Virgin Trains 'Voyager' set speeds through Grayrigg near Shap forming a Glasgow to Birmingham service.

Picture of the Day 8 January 2010

UK Coal have announced that Welbeck colliery is to close in March 2010. The branch line will close in June after the stockpiles of coal have been removed.This will leave the UK with just four 'deep mine' collieries, which will be, Daw Mill, Maltby, Thoresby & Kellingley. With one of the worst winters for some years, and yet more overnight snow having fallen, GBRf Class 66/7 No. 66706 Nene Valley is seen on the colliery branch, powering train 6F22 to Cottam power station on 6 January 2010.

Picture of the Day 9 January 2010

A mid-winter’s morning at Marple. Rose Hill Marple station opened on 2 August 1869 as part of the Macclesfield, Bollington and Marple Railway. The station became a terminus in 1970 when the line South to Macclesfield closed. The line is now operated as a single track ‘long siding' from Marple Wharf Junction, with trains serving Manchester Piccadilly (via Hyde) on a hourly basis. On 8 January 2010, Northern Rail Class 142 unit No. 142007 stands at the terminus with the 08.59 service to Manchester. The station building on the right reopened in 2007 with a new ticket window operating on weekday mornings. Note the moon still shining bright at the top of the picture!

With the remains of Leicester depot in the background and Leicester power signal box in the middle background, Cross Country Trains 1V50 the 09.00 Leeds to Exeter St Davids arrives in Leicester on 10 January 2009 led by hired-in East Coast power car No. 43306. This is understood to have replaced the booked vehicle following a failure.

A 'snap' taken from the cab of the 11.40 Hereford to Birmingham New Street, London Midland service at Shelwick Junction awaiting the 08.22 First Great Western Paddington to Hereford service formed of an unidentified HST as it comes off the single line in blizzard like conditions on 6 January 2010. The train was only running around 15 minutes late, despite the bad weather conditions.

From the start of the Winter 2009-10 timetable, the Wrexham and Shropshire Railway (under the aegis of Chiltern Railways) introduced a fourth train to Wrexham and faster train times on weekdays. A new stop was also brought in at Leamington Spa, giving the Warwickshire town up to four trains per hour to the capital. In heavy snow on Wednesday 13 January 2010, Class 67 No. 67013 Dfyrbont Pontcysilte arrives at Leamington Spa some 35 minutes late due to a broken down train in the Warwick Parkway area, with the 07.23 (1P03) Wrexham General to London Marylebone service.

On Tuesday 12 January 2010, DB Schenker Class 66/0s Nos. 66016 and 66060 worked 'top & tail' powering train 6H95 from Toton to Thoresby Colliery Junction, with a 'High Output Ballast Cleaning' set for use on the High Marnam Test Track. It is seen with 66016 leading, passing Thoresby colliery signal box.

A no train picture tonight, as we look at the view from the London end of Newton Abbot station, recorded on 13 January 2010 when the area was covered in a blanket of fog. The power of the red signals shining through the mist in very impressive.

Class 86/7 No. 86702 is seen near Atherstone on 6 January 2010, working train 1Z96 from Shieldmuir to Willesden, formed of three Class 325 Royal Mail sets. In the period around Christmas and the New Year, the West Coast Royal Mail servies, operated by GBRf, have all been loco-hauled, using various Class 86 and 87 locos.

Picture of the Day 18 January 2010

On the afternoon of Monday 18 January 2010, Midland Metro services were terminated at Soho Benson Road due to overhead line failure in the Jewellery Quarter area. Passengers for Birmingham Snow Hill used London Midland train services to and from The Hawthorns. Ansaldo T69 tram No. 04 stands at the ersatz terminus on the up ‘wrong line’ with the 15.25 service to Wolverhampton St. Georges. The tram crossed over onto the down line before the next stop at Winson Green Outer Circle.

Back in service after recent teething problems, Freightliner Class 70 No. 70002 speeds south through Gloucestershire with train 4Z70 from Rugeley to Stoke Gifford formed of empty FHH coal hoppers, on a very dull 19 Janaury 2010.

Picture of the Day 20 January 2010

At an average gradient of 1:37.7 (2.65%) the Lickey incline near Bromsgrove is the steepest sustained mainline railway incline in Great Britain. Although the need for banking engines has decreased over recent years, some freight trains still require assistance especially during poor adhesion conditions caused by inclement weather. Such was the case on Wednesday 20 January 2010, when DBS Class 66/0 No. 66057 was used to push sister locomotive No. 66126 and the 05.50 (6M96) Margam to Corby steel coil train up the slope. The train is photographed in heavy rain at Bromsgrove station at the foot of the incline. DBS maintains a fleet if five modified Class 66/0 locomotives (Nos. 66055-59) for this duty.

Picture of the Day 21 January 2010

Recently refurbished NMT Power car No. 43062 (with No. 43013 on the rear) leads test train 1Z23, the 04.48 Old Oak Common to Basingstoke (via Yeovil/Exeter/Yeovil) into Gillingham on its return run on 21 January 2010. This is believed to be the first HST to operate between Yeovil Junction and Wilton Junction for nearly 30 years, the last time was when West of England trains were diverted by way of the LSW route in around 1982/3!! (Unless of course anyone knows different??).

In August 2009, DB Schenker (DBS) took over the Stobart Rail and associated Tesco contract from Direct Rail Services. To help promote this new business the DBS management train was in action on 22 January 2010, working the 09.42 (1Z05) London Euston to Rugby Up Sidings run taking VIPs from Tesco to a demonstration of DBS/Stobart Rail intermodal freight facilities. Class 67 No. 67029 Royal Diamond and the train stand in torrential rain beside the makeshift terminal at Rugby prior to working the 12.35 (1Z06) return.

Conditions such as this can cause real problems for auto focus digital cameras, with the snow upsetting the operation of the system. South West Trains have had quite a few problems of late with Class 450's and the snow. No doubt they were crossing their fingers on 20 January 2010, as No. 450081 leads an 8-car formation away from Basingstoke as the 09.54 Basingstoke to London Waterloo stopping service.

Wrexham Class 67 No. 67012 with DVT No. 82301 on the rear form the 07.23 Wrexham to London Marylebone passing through South Greenford on 23 January 2010. the train was diverted via the West Coast Main Line, Wembley, Acton bank and Greenford, prior to reversing at South Ruislip to reach Marylebone.

We turn back the clock to the summer of 1998 for today's Picture of the Day. Taken on 11 August 1998, Hungarian Railways MAV M61 No. M61006 arrives at Tapolca station with a service from Szekesfeherva, while M62 No. M62253 awaits to attach to the rear of the train and return it to Budapest.

With various locos and coaching stock vehicles in the Eastleigh Works complex (including Nos. 47841 and 47709 plus a Class 20 seemingly half way through a repaint?), this view shows Class 73/2 No. 73201 Broadlands approaching Eastleigh with train 5Z73, the 09.26 Selhurst RSMD to Selhurst RSMD (via Guildford/Eastleigh/Woking) serco driver training run on 26 January 2010.

Picture of the Day 27 January 2010

Two DBS Class 67s (Nos. 67016 and 67017) continue to operate a through Cardiff to Paignton and return service to Bristol Temple Meads every weekday, covering for a shortage of FGW DMUs after extra trains were needed after South West Trains ceased to operate west of Exeter from the December 2009 timetable change. On 27 January 2010, the 12.47 Paignton to Bristol departs from Paignton and crosses Torbay Road level crossing. The train is led by No. 67017, formed of four Cargo-D Mk2s with No. 67016 dead on the rear.

Picture of the Day 28 January 2010

The last week in January sees Chateau d'Oex, Switzerland, hold its annual hot air balloon festival. The metre gauge MOB railway operates extra services for the crowds of visitors, and here Be 2/6 7003 approaches Chateau d'Oex with a special on the morning of Sunday 24 January 2010. These Stadler-built units are the mainstay of inner suburban services around Montreux and Vevey, but are rarely seen further up the line.

Picture of the Day 29 January 2010

Work has finally re-started to connect the terminal Platforms 3 and 4 at Birmingham Moor Street station to Network Rail. The work was originally due to be completed in 2005, but has been stalled ever since due to signalling problems. The new platforms are due to be in service by the end of 2010. On Thursday 28 January 2010, Chiltern Railways Class 168/2 unit No. 168219 crosses Digbeth Viaduct and passes track remodelling work on the approach to Moor Street with the 12.20 London Marylebone to Birmingham Snow Hill service.

Picture of the Day 30 January 2010

The Class 70s have had a few problems this past week with major failures of more than one loco causing serious dealys to both passenger anf freight services. Network Rail are known to be very unhappy about the performance of the fleet and by the end of the week a ban on the class working without assistance between Newport and Hereford was introduced. On 27 January 2010 No. 70006 is seen arriving at Stoke Gifford (Bristol Parkway) with the 4Z70 08.53 Rugeley Power Station to Stoke Gifford coal empties and passing sister No. 70005 stabled alongside.

Due to a winter holiday in Canada until 11 February 2010, no Picture of the Day for a few days - sorry. Hopefully the above will be the type of action recorded, nice red CN and CP power in the snow. Taken on 21 February 2009, CN5621 and CN8024 pass Amiens Road near London, Ontario with an eastbound manifest, train 148.
