Picture of the Day 3 July 2008 No. 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley heads the Steam Dreams charter from London Victoria to Bristol and runs in parallel with recently-converted high capacity 'Desiro' HC450559 bound for Weybridge, approaching Wandsworth Town station. The A4 was blowing off vigorously as it approached an adverse signal prior to crossing from the local to the fast lines beyond the station – a very unusual move for the steam runs along this line, and one that resulted in the Weybridge train being held in the fast line platform for several minutes while the route cleared. |

Picture of the Day 10 July 2008 A picture to take a double look at! FGW Nos. 43094 and 43162 working the 07.38 Paignton to Paddington slipped to a stand on Torre bank with 43094 on the front becoming defective with a broken fuel pump. The train was cancelled and rolled back into Paignton. After a second attempt, the set made it as far as Newton Abbot Hackney Yard. Tempting fate a second time, No. 43162 then attempted to haul the train solo back to Laira but also slipped to a stand this time on Dainton bank and was rolled back into Newton Abbot Hackney Yard. Powercars Nos. 43030 and 43161 working a test run from Laira to Newton Abbot and back were commandeered upon arrival at Laira and sent to Hackney Yard to haul the stricken set back to Laira. The very rare working of a triple headed HST is seen pulling away from Totnes. |

Picture of the Day 12 July 2008 For the second day running ED No. 73109 features as our Picture of the Day. Today 12 July 2008 marks exactly 150 years since the line from Brockenhurst to Lymington Town was opened in 1858 (the extension to Lymington Pier opened some years later). It was marked by the addition of No. 73109 added to the usual 3-CIG (today being set No. 1498) running the timetabled services. Here the ED stands out among the green surroundings of the New Forest as it approaches Lymington Junction with the 10.14 Lymington Pier to Brockenhurst service. |

Picture of the Day 20 July 2008 It is always quite rare to record double headed Class 59s, especially when members of different sub-classes operate together. Here on 18 July 2008 Nos. 59104 and 59201 approach Slough, powering train 7A17 from Merehead to Acton. The load is also quite interesting, in that the first half of the train is formed of hired-in Freightliner Heavy Haul hoppers which are on hire to Mendip Rail. The usual Hanson hoppers at the rear of the train. |

Picture of the Day 23 July 2008 During the late evening of 22 July 2008 the first multiple run of a pair of Class 395 'Javelin' EMUs took place on HS1. The train was due to depart Ashford depot around 20.00, but late running of Eurostar services saw the departure delayed until 21.00. By this time most available light had gone, but the use of 3200ISO on a high quality Nikon digital camera produced this most pleasing result. The test train formed of sets Nos.395001 and 395002 is seen passing Km post 73 near Harrietsham on the first outing in multiple on HS1 at 21.10 while running between Ashford International and Ebbsfleet. |
