Picture of the Day 6 March 2009 A month after the last deluge of snow in Dorset yet another unexpected fall hit the county overnight on 5/6 March 2009. In a view which looks more like the S&C or the Scottish Highlands, this actually shows an First Great Western Class 158 heading past the delightfully named hamlet of Melbury Bubb (between Maiden Newton and Yetminster) with the 11.10 Weymouth to Gloucester service. |

The trains were formed with powercars 43301 and 43303. The westbound working of the 06.32 York - plymouth is seen passing Dawlish, led by No. 43301. |

Picture of the Day 15 March 2009 Due to ongoing problems with the Class 139 Parry People Mover No. 139002 encountered following its recent test runs (see Picture of the Day 12 February 2009), the unit will not now start work on the Stourbridge Junction to Stourbridge Town services until at least September 2009. The branch will revert to Class 153 operation until then, with a seven-day service operating. On the first day of operation (Sunday 15 March 2009), the conductor operates the points at Stourbridge Junction as No. 153375 gains access to the branch with the 09.28 ECS from Tyseley. The unit will then form the 10.08 shuttle to Stourbridge Town. Other than the experimental service using the prototype Parry People Mover in 2006, this was the very first Sunday service on the branch since 1915! . |

Picture of the Day 24 March 2009 On 23 March 2009, the first revenue earning train operated into the new Telford Railfreight Terminal. Formed of containers which had previously worked up to Warrington from Marchwood and Bicester the previous Friday, The train on 23 March, was powered by DBS/Army Class 60 No. 60040, operating as train 6G51and formed of 14 containers for the MOD depot. The train then returned conveying three different containers as 6F52 back to Warrington Arpley. The train is seen passing Wellington. |

Picture of the Day 25 March 2009 East Midlands Trains 'twinned' with A1 steam loco 60163 Tornado in a special ceremony at Sheffield station on 24 March 2009, when the Tornado name was unveiled on car No. 60163 of Class 222 set No. 222003. To mark the historic occasion the A1 was brought to Sheffield station and posed alongside its modern traction partner. Although technically the steam loco is more modern than the Bombardier Class 222!. No. 60163 is seen at Sheffield Midland station. |

Picture of the Day 27 March 2009 27 March 2009 was officially the final day of Class 180 operation on First Great Western, with the final sets going off lease. On the final day of operation sets Nos. 180104 and 180105 were in traffic, both working together on Oxford - Paddington services in the morning peak. Set 104 later worked the 11.22 Pddington to Great Malvern and 14.34 return, before working to Worcester during the evening peak. The third of the FGW sets No. 180102 is seen at Evesham on 20 March 2009 forming the 15.26 departure to London Paddington. |

Picture of the Day 29 March 2009 The Class 139 Parry People Mover No. 139002 was granted its passenger licence on Thursday 26 March 2009, and started operating passenger services on the Stourbridge Junction to Stourbridge Town branch on Sunday 29 March 2009. On the inaugural day, the vehicle is photographed leaving Stourbridge Junction with the 10.10 departure. This was the very first revenue earning service to be operated by a production Parry People Mover vehicle. On the right, Class 153 No. 153371 stands in Stourbridge Yard. The unit had just arrived from Tyseley and was used as back-up before taking over passenger services on the branch from 11.30. |
