Picture of the Day 2 May 2009 The railway at Spalding in Lincolnshire is now but a shadow of its former self with the Midland and Great Northern Railway Joint line, the Great Eastern and Great Northern Railway Joint line to March and the Great Northern Railway (GNR) route to Boston which once served the town all long closed. Interestingly, the 16.25 Peterborough to Lincoln Central service currently traverses the up ‘wrong’ line through the station; the only service on the route to do so. On Monday 20 April 2009, East Midlands Trains Class 153 unit No. 153326 crosses back onto the down ‘right’ line just North of the station with the service. In the background (beside the signal post) the former GNR line to Boston can be seen. This route closed in 1970, but a short section was retained until the early 1980s to serve the erstwhile Spalding sugar refinery. |

Picture of the Day 28 May 2009 On my recent photographic trip to the Western side of the United States, this amazing scene came into view on the morning of 26 May 2009 at Warren, near Mojave, when the rear loco No. 4937 of three mid-train helpers powering a northbound grain train was on fire. The fire was in the exhaust system, but had slightly spread to the engine compartment and damaged the body paint. At this location, cell phone signals were nonexistent, so little could be done to inform the driver on the leading loco, some .75 of a mile ahead of the problem in the middle of his train. After watching the train proceed on fire for some five minutes a southbound train approached and informed the driver by radio that his train was 'on fire' The train was brought to an immediate stand and the loco shut down which immediately extinguished the fire. The local fire department were quickly on the scene as was the local Trainmaster and BNSF Rapid Responder who dealt with the incident. The train was delayed for some three hours by this incident |
