One of the workings of the year came on the night of 9/10 November 2008, when the Class 57 booked for the up Penzance to Paddington sleeper failed. FGW hired-in Colas Class 47 No. 47739 which was at Tavistock Junction and worked it light to Penzance to power the overnight service. After departing from Penzance late, the train ran round at Exeter St Davids (where this view was recorded) before heading via Yeovil Junction and Yeovil Pen Mill to regain the Great Western main line at Castle Cary. However, during the late evening a derailment of a stone train at East Somerset Junction blocked the line east of Castle Cary and the train had to again run round and return to Taunton, where a further run round was required before setting off to London via Bristol. Sadly on route the Class 47 had low amps and was failed at Swindon, with passengers having to finish the journey to London on an HST.
