A gaggle of geese on the Peak Forest Canal and a herd of grazing cattle in the field appear to be unconcerned as Northern Class 142 unit No. 142024 coasts towards Romiley on Wednesday 1 September 2010, with the 11.52 Marple to Manchester Piccadilly service.

Freightliner Class 90/0 No. 90041 takes the Kensal Green Chord past Willesden Junction low level on 2 September 2010 forming train 4L97, the 05.05 Manchester Trafford Park to Felixstowe freightliner service. The line on the left is the London Overground/ London Underground Bakerloo Line to/from Harrow and Watford Junction.

Rounding the curve at Stratton (Just south of Maiden Newton) on 4 September 2010, FGW Class 57/6 No. 57604 Pendennis Castle becomes the first Class 57 to traverse the Yeovil-Weymouth line as it heads south with the final (for 2010 at least) 09.09 Bristol Temple Meads to Weymouth service summer Saturday service. The headboard reads "Sand & Cycle Explorer Weymouth" was previously attached to Class 37s back in the 1990s when they regularly worked Bristol-Weymouth trains.

Direct Rail Services Class 37/0 No. 37218 passes Lower Basildon on the Great Western main line on 3 September 2010 powering train 0Z41, the11.40 Eastleigh Works to Crewe Gresty Bridge hauling Class 20s Nos. 20311, 20310, 20312 and 20309.

Picture of the Day 6 September 2010

Chiltern Railways’ Class 120 “bubble car” single unit No. 121020 normally runs only during peak hours Mondays to Fridays between Aylesbury and Princes Risborough. However on Saturday 4 September 2010, Chiltern ran it during the day in normal service to celebrate its 50th birthday. Here we see the 15.38 Aylesbury to Princes Risborough leaving Aylesbury.

With an arc from the third rail pick up shoe of a Class 450 'Desiro' on the down local and another Class 450 overtaking on the down main track, ex-LNER A4 No. 60019 Bittern passes Potbridge on the approach to Basingstoke in heavy rain on 7 September 2009 while en route from Southall to Yeovil.

Picture of the Day 8 September 2010

On 7 September 2010, ERS Class 189 No. 189 098 powered the Melnik-shuttle (Europort - Melnik Tsjechie - train 42375) which in addition to its normal load of containers transported the Royal coaches of King Boris (Bulgaria) and Franz Ferdinand (Tsjechie). The Royal coaches were part of the Royal exhibition held in the Dutch National Railway Museum in Utrecht. The photo above in heavy rain was taken between Harmelen and Breukelen.

Picture of the Day 10 September 2010

One of the rare flask workings to MoD Devonport Dockyard operated on 10 September 2010. Running as train 6Z71 two KUA flask wagons Nos. MODA95770 and MODA95771 operated as the 04.33 Crewe Coal Yard to Keyham. Motive power was provided by DRS Class 37/0 No. 37059. The train is seen rounding the curve at Langstone Rock between Dawlish Warren and Dawlish.

Picture of the Day 11 September 2010

On Friday 10 September 2010, the last of this summers 'Scarborough Flyer' services which ran on Fridays from Crewe operated. The train was powered by 'Duchess' No. 6233 Duchess of Sutherland and is seen at Towthorpe speeding towards York under threatening skies with train 1Z65, the 16.55 Scarborough to Crewe. This locomotive will be out of ticket for main line service shortly and has just a few more duties before overhaul.

Picture of the Day 14 September 2010

The semaphore signalling at Falsgrave, just outside Scarborough station, will be swept away by resignalling in October with control passing to a panel in the signal box at nearby Seamer. The magnificent signal gantry is due to be moved to Grosmont on the North Yorkshire Moors railway. On 9 September 2010, the 05.37 Manchester Airport to Scarborough formed of Class 185 No. 185146 approaches its destination.

Picture of the Day 16 September 2010

The 5.25mile Ellesmere Port to Helsby line in Cheshire certainly lives lives up to it being advertised as having only an occasional passenger service, with currently just two morning and afternoon return workings (Monday to Saturday) operated by Northern Rail. On Wednesday 15 September 2010, the guard of Class 156 unit No. 156472 waits forlornly for any passengers to embark at Ellesmere Port station prior to setting off on the eleven minute journey to Helsby at 15.34. Helsby Hill, which is situated above the train's destination indicator can be seen on the horizon.

With a dark sky above and dampness on the platform, it looks like the autumn weather is upon us. This view of Northern Rail Class 150/1 No. 150138 was recorded at Hope station in Derbyshire on 6 September 2010 and shows the two car set heading for Manchester.

Picture of the Day 18 September 2010

West Coast Railway Co Class 37/5 No. 37685 powered train 1Z57, the 09.20 Solihull to Plymouth formed of six Great Western liveried coaches on 18 September 2010. The train, which operated as a passenger charter, was a stock move for steam powered services over the Liskeard to Looe branch on 19/26 September. The train is seen passing Cockwood Harbour near Starcross in one of the only sunny spells of the afternoon.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway held its annual Diesel Gala over the weekend of 18/19 September 2010, which included the visit of three locos which had not previously worked over the line. Class 20 No. 20227 owned by the Class 20 Society and painted in Railfreight Grey. Class 37 No. 37264 displaying large logo style blue livery and 'Peak Class 45 No. 45041 Royal Tank Regiment owned by the Peal Locomotive Co, painted in BR Blue. Class 37 No. 37264 approaches Beck Hole with the 12.30 Grosmont to Pickering service.

One of the star attractions at InnoTrans 2010, held in Berlin, Germany between 21-26 September 2010 was brand new General Electric Freightliner Class 70 No. 70007. This loco is the first of the second batch of the build and incorporates a number of differences from the original six locos delivered in 2009. The cab side welding has been changed to allow a smooth cab side and refinements have been made to the roof profile. A number of internal modifications have also been made with running experience. TRC was told by Mark Linebach, GE Engineer Project Leader, that No. 70007 will be shipped to the UK by rail via the Channel Tunnel in October. The other five locos of the second batch will follow soon from the GE plant by ship, as of 21 September they had not been completed. Linebach also confirmed that eight Class 70s, Nos. 70013-70020 will be built and delivered at the tail end of 2011 and that the company were committed to building Nos. 70021-70030 in the 2012 financial year. No. 70007 is seen stabled next to a light rail vehicle at Berlin Messe on 24 September 2010.

West Coast Railway Co, Class 37/5 No. 37516 makes a fine sight in the low evening sunshine, as it comes across Corfe Castle viaduct with the returning 1Z87, 17.15 Swanage to Kensington Olympia charter on 25 September 2010, Black Five No. 44932 was on the rear, having brought the train down from London earlier in the day.

Although not currently operational, DB Schenker have repainted Class 60 No. 60099 into Tata steel livery, as part of the launch of Corus steel under the new Tata name. After repainting at Toton depot, No. 60099 was hauled as 0Z38, 03.00 Toton to Scunthorpe on 27 September 2010. The loco is seen posed adjacent to the old slag ladle at the entrance to the works.

Its holiday time for The Railway Centre, the editor will be away from the office until 16 October 2010, so Picture of the Day will not be updated until then. Its another trip to the West Coast of the US in search of good light, interesting locations and photogenic trains. Views like the one above, recorded at Woodford on the Union Pacific Mojave sub-division on 1 June 2010, showing a northbound BNSF double stack train led by three GE Dash9s, the lead unit being No. BNSF4913.
