The skill of the photographer to press the shutter button at exactly the right moment was tested with this exposure, positioning the subject perfect between two lone Pine trees. The picture shows Network Rail test train 1Q12 the 06.34 Eastleigh RC to Eastleigh RC (via Branksome) lead by DBSO No. 9701 and pushed in the rear by No. 31465. The train was recorded powering up Christchurch bank between Christchurch and Hinton Admiral on 3 September 2009.

A train recreating the journey of hundreds of child evacuees, rescued from the Nazis by a man dubbed Britain's Oscar Schindler, operated from Harwich to London Liverpool Street on 4 September 2009 powered by A1 No. 60163 Tornado. 70 years after Sir Nicholas Winton organised for 669 Jewish children to travel from Prague to London to escape concentration camps, some of the survivors were on board todays train. Sir Nicholas, who is now 100 was at Liverpool Street Station to see the train arrive. The train left Prague on 1 September, with 22 passengers who were originally transported as children. Sir Nicholas organised the rescue of 669 children, most of them Jewish, from the then Czecholsovakia in the run-up to World War I. No. 60163 powering train 1Z70 the 09.12 Harwich International to Liverpool Street is seen passing Kelvedon.

One of the highlights of the 2009 summer season came on Saturday 5 September 2009 when DB Shenker provided Class 37s Nos, 37670, painted in DB red livery and EWS liveried No. 37401 to power the summer Saturday additional Bristol to Weymouth and return service, normally powered by top and tail Class 67s. The outward train is seen approaching Bathampton Junction near Bath. It is interesting to note that the usual pair of Class 67s used on this duty remained 'on shed' at Bristol Barton Hill all day.

By September 2009, 16 Class 86/6 AC electric locomotives soldiered on in service with Freightliner, working a handful of intermodal diagrams. On Monday 7 September 2009, two of the veteran machines Nos. 86614 and 86639 power the 14.03 (4L92) Ditton to Felixstowe service through Queensville, Stafford.

Picture of the Day 8 September 2009

7 September 2009 was the first day of traffic following an 11-week blockade of the Scunthorpe line and the first ever day of Class 170s working on the Cleethorpes-Manchester Airport route. Set No. 170302 worked two out and back journeys throughout the day, following a 'launch' at Cleethorpes in the morning. The set is seen departing Scunthorpe on the 17.10 to Manchester.

Do not adjust your screen - yes we now have a green-liveried Class 56. Rail Vehicle Engineering Ltd (RVEL) owned Class 56 No. 56303 is now back in traffic after a period at the RTC Derby, where it has been repainted in green livery. the loco is now on hire Colas Rail and is seen powering the 6Z56 06.15 Washwood Heat to -Boston Docks steel empties on 9 September 2009.

Southend Pier has been dogged with bad luck for decades with fires and collisions, so it is great when something good happens on this little isolated rail system. A new pier station was opened on 8 September 2009, seen here with train "Sir William Heygate".

On Friday 11 September 2009 The Prince of Wales visited Devon for a number of engagements in the Exeter area, including a Climate Change meeting at the Weather Centre, Exeter. The Prince travelled overnight from London Euston to Exeter on the Royal Train, which operated via Hackney Yard, Newton Abbot. On the morning of 11 September the train formed of No. 67005 leading with No. 67006 trailing and formed of vehicles (in order) 2921, 2922, 2923, 2916, 2917, 2915, 2920 formed the 1Z01 09.20 Newton Abbot to Exeter. To allow the Prince to see the sea conditions the train travelled at 25mph from Sprey Point, Teignmouth through to Dawlish Warren. After dropping of the Prince, the train returned to Hackney Yard and stabled all day before collecting the Price for a 18.40 departure from Exeter St Davids to London Euston. The above view shows the train approaching Langstone Bridge, Dawlish complete with two Welsh flags on the front end and Welsh emblems on the buffer heads.

A signallers view od Worcester Shrub Hill. Taken on 10 September 200,. it shows FGW HST No. 43030 Christian Lewis Trust leading with the 14.06 departure to London Paddington, normal services have now been resumed following engineering work to re-double the Cotswold line over the summer months. London Midland Class 170 No. 170511 awaits in the bay platform with the 14.13 to Gloucester, a service which will cease from the December 2009 timetable change.

Colas Rails 6Z48 Burton on Trent to Dollands Moor was hauled by Riviera Class 47s 47848 and 47839 on Thursday 10 September. the train is seen powering away from a signal check at Bentley Heath. Around an hour after this picture was taken No. 47848 caught fire and the fire brigade had to attend to it at Didcot. It was removed from the train at Reading.

With the Wrexham and Shropshire Railway (WSR) Wrexham General to London Marylebone service being routed from Wolverhampton to Coventry via Tame Bridge Parkway, the Aston to Stechford line now has its first regular passenger service for many years. On Saturday 12 September 2009, Class 67 No. 67013 Dyfrbont Pontcysylite powers the 11.23 from Wrexham through Washwood Heath on the line. With the first rake of Mk. III coaches now in the WSR grey livery, photographs of trains in the eye-catching ‘Inter-City blue-grey’ livery will soon be history.

During 2009, the famous Severn Bridge Junction signal box at Shrewsbury underwent a major refurbishment program, which included a new roof. On the afternoon of Monday 14 September 2009, Arriva Trains Wales Class 175/1 unit No. 175107 departs from the station and approaches the scaffolded structure with the 12.38 Holyhead to Maesteg service. In the background, Class 158 units Nos. 158825 and 158836 wait to come off the Wolverhampton line with the 14.09 Birmingham International to Pwllheli train.

On 16 September yet another train of export Class 87s departed Long Marston for Crewe and export to Bulgaria. The transit move was powered by Hanson Traction Class 56 No. 56311 hauling Class 87s Nos. 87014, 87013 in Bulgarian Railways yellow and green livery together with rail-blue No. 87004 - also for export - and Class 86 No. 86401 bound for Crewe. The train is seen passing through Ryecroft Junction, Walsall.

Class 67 No. 67005 Queen’s Messenger made a very rare – if not unique  - appearance on the 07.51 (6G51) Warrington to Donnington and 13.15 (6G52) return MoD stores train on Wednesday 16 September 2009. The ‘Royal’ locomotive is photographed at Donnington Junction, Wellington on the return leg.

Both Class 139 Parry People Mover vehicles (Nos. 139001 and 139002) were taken out of service on Monday 14 September 2009, due to flanges going out of tolerance on various wheel sets. Therefore, the Stourbridge Town branch has reverted to Class 153 operation for the foreseeable future, until the problems are resolved. On the evening of Thursday 17 September, No. 153371 stands at Stourbridge Junction with a shuttle to Stourbridge Town.

The final First Great Western Summer Sunday services between Exeter and Okehampton for the 2009 season operated on 20 September 2009. This view taken at Okehampton shows FGW Class 153 No. 153368 with the 11.54 arrival from Exeter. In the near platform is BR 1960s green-liveried 3H 'Thumper' No. 1132 on a service to Meldon.

On 18 September 2009, the Swanage Railway organised an inspection special for various VIPs from Network Rail, Dorset County Council and South West Trains, so that they could see first hand what the railway were hoping to achieve (and why they are hoping for financial funding) with regards to regular main line services onto the National Network.One of the most important locations visited was the former BP sidings at Furzebrook that the railway would dearly love to have use of the sidings that have been disused since the last LPG trains ran in 2005. Former SWT "bubblecar" No. 55028 is seen at Furzebrook with the sidings to the left. The train made two trips of the NR section of the line from Norden up to Worgret Junction.

Work is now well under way with ballasting the LGV Rhin-Rhone new high speed line in France. Recently most activity has been seen in the Rioz area north east of Besancon. On 13 September 2009, Nos. 58.005 with 58.018 and 58.026 'top and tail' a ballast train near the village of Anthon, near Rioz. In the far distance Nos. 58.009 and 58.034 'top and tail' a shorter works train.

Due to a shortage of DVTs, the first Mk 3 DVT in the new Chiltern Railways blue and white livery (without branding) No. 82302 recently converted at Wolverton from No. 82123, was pressed into service with the Wrexham, Shropshire and Marylebone Railway on Thursday 24 September 2009, working the 12.17 (1J82) London Marylebone to Shrewsbury and 16.07 (1P33) return. The colourful vehicle is photographed at Wellington with train 1J82. Motive power was provided by Class 67 No. 67010.

On 24 September recently restored rail-blue liveried Class 31/1 No. 31106 operated a Bristol to Derby via Weymouth track inspection special. The train is recorded passing Bradford Peverell between Maiden Newton and Dorchester West.

The Modern Locomotives Illustrated and South West Trains (SWT) ‘Desiro Day’ took place on Saturday 26 September 2009, when a large number of participants took the chance to travel on most SWT trains for just £20. During the afternoon of Desiro Day, Class 450 ‘Desiro’ units Nos. 450115 and 450088 are caught speeding along the up fast line through Oatlands Cutting near Walton-on-Thames forming the 12.20 Weymouth to London Waterloo service.

Delayed by a lineside fire here, on Saturday 26 September 2009, during the SVR's 'Autumn Steam Gala', the 15.50 Kidderminster to Highley service finally approaches Bewdley, behind Gresley Society's 'N2' No.1744 with Pete Waterman watching the road ahead from the footplate. Note the appropriate ex-LNER teak stock behind.

After arriving in the West Country on Saturday 27 September 2009, the sole DBS red-liveried Class 66 No. 66152 has been operating Cornish clay traffic over the past couple of days. On 29 September the loco was captured approaching Lostwithiel and passing the down semaphore signal, while powering train 6G08, the 14.27 Goonbarrow to Carne Point, Fowey via a run round at Lostwithiel.

Colas Rails 6Z56 06.15 Washwwod Heath to Boston Docks empties was worked by green-liveried Class 31 No. 31190 on 30 September 2009. The train of covered steel wagons is seen at Netherfield on the way to Boston, this is reported to have been the first Class 31 to haul a mainline freight train since FM Rails unsuccessful coal trial to Rugeley in June 2006.
