In immaculate 'as-built' condition, No. D5300 is seen at Doncaster after delivery from BRCW and before commissioning had been undertaken. The loco is seen from its No. 1 or cooler group end. At this time oval buffers were fitted, over the years the majority carried route buffers, except for the Lothian coal locos which retained oval buffers. Comparison of this fleet as the BRCW Type 3s for the Southern Region will show a number of common design features. CJM Collection.

Now in preservation, No. 26004, one of the locos later operated by Trainload Coal in the Lothian area shows the revised front end received by all locos in the 1980s. The former front gangway doors have been sealed up, while the disk train reporting system has been removed, with just two white lights left for frontal identification. The two larger lights below the cab windows are tail lights. This loco allocated to freight work lost its steam train heating identified by the space on the underframe and the omission of the steam heat pipe on the buffer beam. CJM.

Eastfield depot in Glasgow returned No. D5301 to near original condition as possible in 1992 just prior to final withdrawal. Its front disk train reporting system was returned and the loco was repainted in BR green livery with a white roof and cab window surrounds. A high-intensity headlight was fitted to meet the latest Group Standards. The loco is seen from its No. 1 end outside Eastfield depot. CJM.
