Class 44 See Technical Data

Showing as built condition, the pioneer main line BTC modernisation scheme diesel no. D1 is illustrated from its No. 1 or cooler group end. These locos which were very heavy were counted on an unusual 1Co-Co1 wheel arrangement, the outer set of wheels being unpowered and just used for weight distribution. Buffing gear was also bogie mounted rather than body fitted. CJM Collection.

The front end of No. D9 (44009) was rebuilt after a collision with a standard Class 45/46 nose section housing a central 4-charactor route indicator panel. This view shows a loco painted in standard post 1967 rail blue with full yellow warning end. The buffer beam shows that steam heating and multiple operation equipment has been removed. No. 44009 is seen from its No. 1 end at Toton. CJM.
