| With steam emitting from its boiler and steam pipe, No. D1058 Western Nobleman stands at Paddington on November 18, 1976 with the 17.21 commuter service to Twyford. The loco is seen in rail blue livery, with its running number wound round in the defunct route indicator box. CJM. |

| A handful of locos had extra air vents placed in the front body structure on the drivers side, giving the appearance of a black box on the front end. One loco so modified was No. D1071 Western Renown, seen after withdrawal at BREL Swindon awaiting disposal. CJM. |

| Looking is superb condition, three preserved 'Western's' Nos. D1015, D1023 and D1062 pose outside the running shed at Laira Plymouth, their old home depot on September 14, 1991 when five of the preserved class were brought together for a depot open day. No. D1023 shows the maroon with small yellow panel livery, while No. D1062 shows maroon livery with a full yellow end. CJM. |

| Soon to be authorised for running over the Railtrack network, No. D1015 Western Champion is seen at Bristol Barton Hill in the summer of 2001 taking part in a staff open day. One end of D1015 sports a 'T' yellow end, as originally applied when built as part of a trial to establish the design of nose end warning panels. The buffer beam of the 'Western' fleet is very uncluttered with main reservoir pipes below each buffer, a vacuum brake pipe to the left of the coupling, a steam pipe to the right of the coupling and an air brake pipe (red) above.
