The main difference being the drop-head buck-eye couplers originally fitted on the Class 59/2s. The four ARC owned Class 59/1s were originally painted in yellow/gray livery, which was amended to the scheme shown above from the late 1990s, following the formation of Mendip Rail, a bonding of the Foster Yeoman and ARC rail operations. CJM.

The third derivative of the Class 59, the Class 59/2, were six National Power locomotives built for hi-capacity block coal operations in Yorkshire based at Ferrybridge, after a short time of operation, National Power decided to sell the rail business to newly formed EWS, who took over the six locos. All were quickly repainted into EWS house colours as shown here on No. 59201. The six locos were later transferred south to Hither Green for London area Mendip aggregate operations. CJM.

In 1997 a contract was signed to hire one of the Foster Yeoman locos, No. 59003 to German operator DB for stone transportation contracts. Prior to shipment to Germany the loco was repainted in a joint Foster Yeoman/DB livery and modified for German operations. The loco was shipped to Berlin in June 1997 and was sold in 2001 to UK-based German operator Heavy Haul Power. Resplendent in its DB colours No. 59003 is seen at Merehead prior to shipping. CJM.

Following the formation of Mendip rail, a joint venture of Foster Yeoman and ARC, it was planned that the Mendip Rail would become a UK national freight operator with its own drivers and staff. However this later fell through. Loco No. 59002 was however repainted into MRL Mendip Rail livery of green, orange and silver. CJM

The Class 59s only seldom work passenger trains, however once a year Mendip Rail operate a staff outing charter, in 2001 this visited Penzance and is seen here passing Aller Junction, west of Newton Abbot, powered by Yeoman No. 59001 and Hanson-liveried No. 59101. CJM.
