CLASS 308

The AM8 fleet were introduced for Great Eastern operation in 1960/61, when nine sets (133-141) were built for the Clacton/Walton route. A further 24 sets were introduced in 1962 (142-165) for through Liverpool Street services. The sets were identical to the AM7s, but incorporated the classic early 1960s suburban emu front end. A roller blind destination indicator was provided together with a four character route indicator on the roof line.
As part of the 1962 order a batch of sets for the Tilbury line were constructed, these had a MLV (Motor Luggage Van) in place of the MBS. A further three sets Nos. 443-455 were ordered in 1961 as all second class sets.
Refurbishing of the stock took place in the 1980s, with improved passenger areas, the first class accommodation was moved to a driving car.
In the early 1990s after displacement from the Great Eastern, the 308/1s passed through Doncaster Works and were reformed as three car sets for West Yorkshire PTE use on the electrified network radiating from Leeds. These sets were withdrawn in 2001 after Class 333 sets were introduced.
When built sets were finished in BR green livery, this gave way to BR rail blue and then blue and grey, Network South East colours then followed and after transfer to Leeds, the WYTPE maroon and cream colours were applied.
