CLASS 321

One of the most successful modern EMUs is the Class 321 fleet, produced by BREL York works for the then Network South East operating business. The first 66 sets, classified as 321/3 were built for the Great Eastern operating area in 1988-90. While these were being assembled a follow-on order was placed for almost identical sets for the Euston-Birmingham slow and semi-fast services, these were classified as 321/4. To supplement the GE fleet, the final 11 of the 321/4 sets went to Great Eastern.
A further follow-on order for three units followed in 1991 for West Yorkshire PTE to operate on their then recently electrified Doncaster-Leeds route, these sets classified 321/9 were set out for all standard class passengers.
