CLASS 323

Built in the early 1990s, these were the first EMUs built by Hunslet TPL at their Leeds factory, many difficulties surrounded their introduction which was delayed by many months due to technical problems. The initial order was for 22 sets to perform West Midlands duties under the Centro operating banner, these sets being based at Soho depot in Birmingham. This order was followed by 17 for North Western operation in the Manchester, Crewe and Liverpool area, three sets of this batch having revised internal layout for Manchester Airport shuttle services. The final four sets of the fleet went to Centro in the Birmingham area.
Internally these sets are very basic, with 3+2 seating in the high-density style. In the Birmingham area the sets are concentrated on the Cross-City route, where at peak times patronage is very high.
These sets are fabricated out of aluminium with GRP front ends, electrical equipment is supplied by Holec.
