CLASS 325

AS part of the modernisation of the Royal Mail business, this fleet of universal EMUs were built in 1995-96 by Adtranz at Derby, to the successful Class 319 dual-power design, but fitted out expressly for Royal Mail or parcel transportation. Each vehicle has a pair of roller-shutter doors on each side with the internal space designed to take roll-on, roll-off mail carriers.
The sets are designed to operate from both 750V dc third rail and from 25kV ac overhead power collection. Buffer beam fittings allow the use of conventional buck-eye couplers for multiple working with like sets, or drop-head buck-eyes can be lowered for the attachment to conventional locomotives. TDM is fitted to allow operation with modern classes of diesel and electric loco.
The Class 325s, all painted in Royal Mail red are operated by EWS and are usually to be found on the West Coast Main Line as well as on the route from London to Tonbridge in Kent.
