CLASS 402 (2HAL)

This fleet of two coach main line non-corridor units, classified as HAL, with a lavatory fitted in one coach, was introduced from 1939 for use on the London-Maidstone/Gillingham electrification. Construction was carried out at Eastleigh Works from mid-1938, with the first deliveries made in early 1939. The set formation was a driving motor brake third (DMBT) fitted with a full width driving cab with guard's accommodation behind, together with seven third class compartments. Coupled to this was a driving trailer composite (DTCL), set out in four first and four third class compartments together with a toilet, all being connected via a side corridor.
Power equipment housed under the DMBT consisted of two 275hp English Electric traction motors fitted with electro-pneumatic control equipment. The original HAL stock was numbered in the series 2601-76. In late 1939 a further batch of 16 units was built and numbered 2677-92, and these were identical in design to the 1938 build. During the war years several HAL and other unit types received damage. Some were repaired but those seriously damaged were a total loss. Six HAL replacements were constructed at Eastleigh in 1948 and received the numbers 2693-99. These were different in external appearance and resembled the suburban (SUB) builds then under construction. The internal layout was also amended, with the DMBT vehicle now having seven compartments connected via a side corridor. A final HAL, giver the number 2700, emerged in 1955 and again differed internally. The DMBT was now fitted with eight third class compartments connected by a centre gangway.
From their introduction until the late 1950s these units were on the Charing Cross to Gillingham/ Maidstone route. However, following the introduction of new HAP stock, the HAL fleet was released to suburban and semi-fast services on all three Southern Region operating divisions. When introduced the HAL fleet was painted SR green, a livery in which most units remained However, a few that underwent repairs after 1967 emerged in BR rail blue. Final withdrawal of the type took place in October 1971.
