CLASS 483

Introduced as part of the modernisation of the Isle of Wight in 1989-90. these nine 2-car ex LUL 1938 tube stock sets were formed. Vehicles were rebuilt by Eastleigh Works and shipped to the Island. The sets usually operate as 2-car formations, but at peak times operate as four car formations. All sets are based at Ryde St Johns.
When introduced sets were painted in NSE livery, this remained until 2000 when under Stagecoach -ownership, the sets were repainted in dinosaur livery, one set No. 007 has been returned to near original LUL red livery. The long term future of this stock is in some doubt, as route modernisation needs to be carried out as does a stock replacement programme.
