Southern completes CCTV fitting to 456 fleet

Train operator Southern announced on 3 April 2007 that it has completed the installation of CCTV on all 24 of its Class 456 trains, which have recently been through a comprehensive refurbishment programme.

This now means that 267 of Southern’s fleet, which consists of 279 trains are fully covered by CCTV surveillance.

Commenting on this milestone, Southern’s Managing Director, Chris Burchell said: “The safety and security of our passengers is our number one priority. Passengers can now travel on these trains secure in the knowledge that there is additional protection, and I have no doubt that the presence of CCTV already acts as an effective deterrent on our other trains.”

CCTV on Southern trains has played an important role in identifying and tracking down offenders over the past five years. Crime rates in many areas on the network have been significantly reduced.  Southern has also put in place a well resourced security Task Force in support of its safer stations and trains initiatives.
