The Port of Felixstowe names Class 08

The Port of Felixstowe named Class 08 No. 08484 Captain Nathaniel Darell on 2 July 2007 commemorated the local hero, in a ceremony held in the Port.

The ceremony was attended by the Deputy Mayor of Felixstowe, Councillor Mike Deacon, and the Chairman and members of Landguard Fort Trust, the Felixstowe History and Museum Society, and the Felixstowe Society, as well as executives from the Port of Felixstowe.

The idea to remember Captain Darell in this way was the brainchild of local historian and member of Landguard Fort Trust, George Buckland. George had been looking for a suitable locomotive to take on the hero's name, and his wish coincided with the completion of the Port’s official lease agreement with Traditional Traction Limited for locomotive No. 08484.

Speaking at the naming ceremony, David Gledhill, Chief Operating Officer of Hutchison Ports (UK) limited, which owns the Port of Felixstowe, said: “It is with great pleasure that we are able to make George’s dream come true. It is particularly pertinent that the naming ceremony is taking place on ‘Darell’s Day’, which is celebrated annually at Landguard Fort, to commemorate the day in 1667 when Captain Nathaniel Darell and 500 brave men repelled the Dutch invasion.”

Locomotive 08484 provides support to the Port of Felixstowe’s existing shunting loco, Colonel Tomline, to ensure that a reliable service is maintained to customers across the Port’s South and North Rail Terminal.
