GNER has unveiled the latest stage of its programme of station improvements, aimed at improving the journey experience for passengers. Three glass-covered waiting ‘pods’ within Newcastle station, between platforms 3 and 4 and platforms 5 and 6, are being refurbished at a cost of £50,000.

Two of the waiting areas were reopened on Friday, 20 July with work ongoing to complete the third early next week.

Lighting and décor inside the waiting areas is being enhanced, while seating – previously in bare steel – is replaced with a more comfortable yet practical cushioned design.

GNER spokesman John Gelson said: “The waiting ‘pods’ have been a feature of Newcastle station since the 1980s and provide welcome shelter for passengers, particularly in areas of the station which can be relatively exposed to the weather. It’s important that we offer a warm welcome for passengers. The new waiting areas provide just that – and their glass structure means there’s always a clear view of the trains outside”.

GNER manages 12 stations on the East Coast Main Line, including in the North East at Berwick-upon-Tweed, Newcastle, Durham and Darlington.
