| Cotswold Line flooding
|
Hundreds of Network Rail engineers are working around the clock to repair the damage to the Cotswold Line between Oxford and Worcester which has been hit by the unprecedented flooding in the region over the past few days. Services are not expected to resume until early August as engineers remove debris and start the huge task of rebuilding the railway. Embankments and cuttings which have been washed away need to be rebuilt, damaged bridges repaired and track and signalling systems replaced before the railway can reopen safely. John Gill, Network Rail Area General Manager for the West Country told the media: "I want to thank passengers and train operating companies for their patience during these very difficult circumstances. The water has caused extensive damage at more than 20 sites in the area around Evesham and Moreton-in-Marsh. The first challenge has been to get our engineers and heavy plant to site due to the local road conditions and waterlogged ground. We will now be working around the clock to restore services as quickly as possible, but as ever - safety has to remain our number one priority." A spokesperson for First Great Western added: "We regret the considerable disruption that this unprecedented flooding is causing to our services and we are working closely with Network Rail to get the line re-opened and services running again. Passengers can get the latest information from www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk , or by phoning National Rail Enquiries on 08457 484950." Due to the local road conditions there is currently no replacement bus service along the route however there is a 1 hourly shuttle bus service between Evesham Leisure Centre (the station is currently inaccessible) and Cheltenham where passengers can pick up train services to London Paddington and other destinations. |
