| South West Trains Class 158s and 159/1s
|
A number of people have asked about the renumbering and modification of South West Trains Class 158s. At the time of reallocation to Salisbury depot it was agreed with rolling stock library to renumber the ad-hoc units in a new number series to immediately identify the SWT sets. The block from 158880 upwards was selected and thus the carriage numbers no longer reflect the set number. In the past the last two digits of the set number and vehicle number have matched. The sets have come from various operators and part of the deal with SWT was for the units to be refurbished and repainted into standard SWT main line livery at Wabtec Doncaster. The sets are presently passing through the works and a few unrefurbished sets in previous operator liveries remain at Salisbury, all sets have already been renumbered. | Above: The first reported working of one of the 'new' South West Trains Class 158 sets over the Sea Wall was on Saturday 9 June 2007 when No. 158886 (the former 158779) formed the 14.20 Waterloo-Penzance. After spending the night in Penzance, the set returned on 10 June 2007 forming the 13.50 Penzance-Waterloo/Portsmouth. The train is seen crossing Cockwood Harbour. CJM |
