Improvements at Strathcarron

Passengers at Strathcarron Station are benefiting from improved access thanks to a £75,000 investment from First ScotRail.

The step free access has also led to a new home for the sheep of local man Kenny Cameron who was provided with another pen after land was purchased for the enhancement.

In addition, a disabled parking space has been added to the car park as well as a set down facility next to the ramp entrance.

The step free access on the westbound platform follows customer feedback on what facilities would enhance the station and is funded by First ScotRail through its ongoing £40m investment programme to provide better facilities at stations and on trains across Scotland.

Customers using wheelchairs, as well as elderly customers and those travelling with young children or heavy luggage, can now more easily reach the platform to travel to Kyle of Lochalsh and intermediate stations along the route. The eastbound platform (to Inverness) already has car parking and step free access.

Peter Williams, First ScotRail’s commercial director, said: “We are delighted to have delivered this step free enhancement which will offer an improved journey experience for many of our customers using the station.”

Heather Battson, Transport Scotland's rail quality improvement manager said: “This is good news for local passengers. It is part of our aim and part of First ScotRail's franchise commitment to improve facilities for passengers at stations throughout Scotland. We welcome the recently completed works at Stathcarron Station which will make access to the station easier".
