City of Derby name applied to Class 222

Midland Mainline has named Class 222 No. 222007 City of Derby in recognition of the city’s important role in British railway history and as the heart of the company’s business operations.

The official naming ceremony, conducted by The Mayor of Derby, Councillor John Ahern, took place at platform 4 of Derby station on 17 May 2007. The ceremony commenced at 10.30 with a champagne reception held in Derby station’s First Lounge. The official naming ceremony then took place at 11.00. After the event guests joined 'City of Derbyon the 11.34 departure to London St Pancras as far as Leicester.

Councillor John Ahern, Mayor of Derby, said: “I am particularly proud to name the train as my career includes 20 years in the railway industry. The naming is a great acknowledgement of the railway engineering excellence that has existed in Derby for over 150 years.”

The City of Derby train is the fourth in a series of official namings to honour the unique characteristics of the cities along the Midland Mainline route.
