Class 222 named 'City of Nottingham'

Midland Mainline has named Class 222 No. 222005 after the City of Nottingham in recognition of its position as one of the busiest stations along the East Midlands to London route.

Nottingham station played host to the official naming ceremony conducted by The Lord Mayor, Councillor Des Wilson, on 30 January 2007.

The ceremony was attended by a number of local dignitaries, business leaders, press and VIPs who boarded the City of Nottingham bound for London St. Pancras via Loughborough and Leicester.

This was the first in a series of official namings that honour the unique characteristics of the cities along the Midland Mainline route to London.

Speaking at the ceremony Tony Wrighton, Deputy Managing Director for Midland Mainline said: “We’re very excited that our parent company National Express Group has been short listed as a bidder for both the new East Midlands and Cross Country franchises.  Both Midland Mainline and National Express are passionate about travel, it’s our area of expertise and we’re enthusiastic and confident about our plans for the new franchises. We’re proud of our excellent performance record and our recent results in the National Passenger Survey were also above average. We know that Nottingham and its people have played a key part in our success. This naming is our way of saying thank you for that and celebrating 10 years of successful partnership between Midland Mainline and the wonderful city of Nottingham. We're delighted that the Lord Mayor could help us by carrying out the naming ceremony.”
